A burglar failed to escape with his loot after he was discovered by vigilant neighbours and was beaten mercilessly with several different implements on Saturday night, before being handed over to the police.
According to reports, residents of One Mile, Wismar caught the man leaving the house of an education official with two bags of loot. He is now a patient of the Mackenzie Hospital under police guard.
According to a police press release, around 11:30 pm on Saturday, public-spirited citizens arrested the man and handed him over to them after he was caught leaving the premises of a resident who was not at home at the time.
He was found in possession of two bags filled with foodstuff and other articles taken from the house, which he had apparently broken into through a window.
Stabroek News was informed that there were several activities in the mining town that night, including a teachers’ karaoke event and two wakes, so many persons were not at home.
Vigilant neighbours noticed the man walking around the house “as if he lived there”, this newspaper was told and one of them decided to go around to the backdoor.
There, it was found that the man had already placed two bags filled with items outside the back door.
When the residents confronted the man, he initially tried to pretend that he was the owner of the house.
This apparently angered the residents who had already armed themselves with pieces of wood and iron and they began to rain blows on the man, who then pleaded with them not to hit him on his feet since he had to use them.
The police were subsequently called and the man, who may have suffered broken bones, was handed over.
Residents in the area said the man was a stranger, but there are reports that he had been caught under similar circumstances in a house in another section of Linden – “the valley” – and was hospitalized after he received a sound beating. (Zoisa Fraser)

That is the way to go.He is lucky.
Hopefully this is the end of his theiving career. He was lucky that they show some compassion and did not go farther with the beating.
Many more communities need to band together and take these parasites out of commission.
Now I hope the court will give him the maximum sentence.
Darn thief and liar, u took advantage on this owner, a man’s home is his palace, u r lucky ur hands were’nt broken, find other means of survival, maybe if u had found someone at home, u would have injured or worst, killed them, good neighbors, keep looking out for each other.
Well done! This is real good ‘Community Policing”
These public spirited citizens around Guyana are doing better work than the Police. The criminals now know that residents are alert.Good Community Police work.
Not better work than the Police BIG D; those public spirited citizen are doing better work than the courts.
When the police catch them, the courts give them a sentence which does not deter them and they are soon on the streets again doing the same crimes.
After this humiliation by the ordinary people, this criminal JUST-MAY go straight.
Isn’t this man a US citizen?
There r thiefs in the US and all other Countries, I love the way the Guyanese citizens are taking back the Counrty from these scumbags, when someone leaves their homes, they should not be placed in a position wondering if their palace is safe, supposed the man had returned to his home and confronted this thief, he might have been killed, another family’s life torn to pieces because of these scumbags, as I mentioned b4 these citizens who caught him should be commended for their neighbourly swift apprehendsion of this scarecrow thief, a menance to society.
So what if he is an american citizen?
Does that make him above the laws of Guyana?
What’s the difference if he’s a US citizen, he just got a Guyanese style CUT-RASS!!!
Yu dont get no sympathy Here.
ANKOKO, you have me confused, I thought you lived in Guyana
Yes I do. Also visit US and UK. I made a mistake. That comment was for the Datadin issue and don’t know how it got here. Whatever it is it’s my bad!
wow, i always get a good laugh when i read these stories of people caught loot other people properties. I applaud the lindeners for their vigilance and catching this thief and giving him a sound thrashing and then handing him over to the police i hope he learn his lesson this time. Stabroek news what is the man’s name why don’t you let us know his name.
I Too think the name of these shameless rascals should be made known. This is the way to go. Thrash them properly.Good lesson for the others.
I hope they particularly pummeled his precious feet.
It seems clear that the Police are not even involved in Crime Prevention. The public spirited citizens in Rose Hall Canje, and at No.79 Village Corentyne should be commended. Most of these crimes are committed with guns, and surely the Police need to step up on random searches,in the areas where crime is most prevalent. Most of the robberies in Georgetown are gun related.More patrols on the streets,on foot and in vehicles.Coming on holiday at Christmas.
The police can’t be everywhere every time, and the criminals know this. This is why public spirited people in every community should be involved to assist the police. these folks did a great job. I hope this type of community policing spreads throughout Guyana.
