-suspect charged

A 17-year-old girl of Auchlyne, Corentyne ingested a poisonous substance and died after a man allegedly raped her three Sundays ago and threatened that he would return to kill her.

Dead is Cindy Mahadeo who was alone at home when the alleged incident occurred around 10 am. According to reports, after the man committed the act, he told her he would return at 1 pm to kill her and she fearfully ingested the poisonous substance and subsequently sent a text message to a cousin informing her that she had drunk poison. Mahadeo was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was admitted as a patient. She died on Thursday last.

On Friday, Premnauth Sugrim, said to be in his late 30s, was charged with rape at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
Sugrim had been arrested and released just after the incident but after Mahadeo died he was rearrested and charged.
Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant, objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and the fact that the defendant and the victim’s family live in the same area. However, Magistrate Krishndat Persaud placed the man on $150,000 bail.

Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told that when relatives got the news that Mahadeo had ingested poison and rushed over to her house they found her in a hammock vomiting. Relatives said they tried to question the girl about her reason for drinking the poison but she was apparently too “shame fuh tell we.” She later told the doctors about the alleged rape and the information was passed on to relatives.

Mahadeo later related to her mother, Algama Mahadeo, a domestic worker that her assailant had asked her for a drink of water and when she went into the kitchen to get it, he followed her, threw her on the floor and performed the act.

The girl told her mother that she fought him and gave him several scratches on his neck and he slapped her.
He also warned her not to tell anyone and even threatened that he would return at 1 pm to kill her. “After he tell she that she get scared and she drink the poison before one o’clock,” Ramdass told this newspaper yesterday.

Ramdass said she had made arrangements with the accused to renovate her kitchen and he was supposed to return in two weeks to start the work. “But he come before the two weeks and he know that me won’t a be home then,” she said.
Mahadeo who dropped out of school two years ago after her father died was the second of three children.

I hope they find this animal & ‘pen’ him. We CANNOT afford to lose our youth to ‘cesspit’ accidents. This kind of crap is responsible for at least one life per week. Why do we pay certain people to protect & serve us? Why don’t we just form vigilante groups & arm ourselves with homemade weapons to protect our homes & communities? That way we could demand that the MoHA dismantle whatever foolice unit exists in our particular community & we should receive whatever monies they would’ve received, just a suggestion because these “other batch of incompetents” are not really contributing anything to provide service & or protection to our communities.

Here we go again. So sorry that this young girl had to kill herself. People seem to have no respect for the law, nor law enforcement. The rapist was arrested and released. The victim had to die before he was rearrested. The young woman may be took her life because she had no faith in the police, whose motto is, SERVICE AND PROTECTION.

      Shocking news here again.
My sympathy goes out to the family and may this teen rest in peace.
The culprit should never be let out of jail and the this would have never happen.

This is not unusual for Kids of Indian descent or black children on the Corentyne to become bread winners or stay home kids after the deaths of either parents. It was hard then and it is harder now nothing has changed. Long ago kids used to be protected by neighbours and school teachers and even law enforcement officers now you cant trust anyone. Guyana has become so lawless that even death has no impact on anyone. Crime of all sorts is like a walk in the park, all because they can get away with it. My sincere condolences to that family. I may even know that family because I have lived in that area a long time ago. In our eyes he has gotten away but he has another judge to go before and his punishment will be like no other.

Again we see the inefficiency of the GPF.
It is sad that the rapist would have gotten away with his crime if the girl had not died.
She is a marytr for all those young women who are being abused at the hands of these ruthless men.
All of them should be collected and cremated for the havoc they are causing in people’s lives.
I am naturally against violence but we need some undercover policemen to exterminate them as the justice system is failing us.

    • billp CANADA says:

How was the GPF inefficient on this one, did they not lay charges and even objected to bail ? It was the magistrate that granted him bail.

OMG wht is happening to our women. I think all of us need to arm our selves with a gun. The Prison needs more women. Women i has one u should too. It is happening all over every day. My daughter was raped also and people had all kinds of bad things to say.{and it was my Guyanese People}May her soul rest in peace
