-suspect charged

A 17-year-old girl of Auchlyne, Corentyne ingested a poisonous substance and died after a man allegedly raped her three Sundays ago and threatened that he would return to kill her.

Dead is Cindy Mahadeo who was alone at home when the alleged incident occurred around 10 am. According to reports, after the man committed the act, he told her he would return at 1 pm to kill her and she fearfully ingested the poisonous substance and subsequently sent a text message to a cousin informing her that she had drunk poison. Mahadeo was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was admitted as a patient. She died on Thursday last.

On Friday, Premnauth Sugrim, said to be in his late 30s, was charged with rape at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
Sugrim had been arrested and released just after the incident but after Mahadeo died he was rearrested and charged.
Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant, objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and the fact that the defendant and the victim’s family live in the same area. However, Magistrate Krishndat Persaud placed the man on $150,000 bail.

Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told that when relatives got the news that Mahadeo had ingested poison and rushed over to her house they found her in a hammock vomiting. Relatives said they tried to question the girl about her reason for drinking the poison but she was apparently too “shame fuh tell we.” She later told the doctors about the alleged rape and the information was passed on to relatives.

Mahadeo later related to her mother, Algama Mahadeo, a domestic worker that her assailant had asked her for a drink of water and when she went into the kitchen to get it, he followed her, threw her on the floor and performed the act.

The girl told her mother that she fought him and gave him several scratches on his neck and he slapped her.
He also warned her not to tell anyone and even threatened that he would return at 1 pm to kill her. “After he tell she that she get scared and she drink the poison before one o’clock,” Ramdass told this newspaper yesterday.

Ramdass said she had made arrangements with the accused to renovate her kitchen and he was supposed to return in two weeks to start the work. “But he come before the two weeks and he know that me won’t a be home then,” she said.
Mahadeo who dropped out of school two years ago after her father died was the second of three children.

Those who allegedly rape need to be tried as soon as possible and when found guilty lost away in jail. This one threatened the life of the girl, obviously she thought taking her own life is far better that being touched by the beast again. Lord knows how mad I am at this moment, it is hard for me to focus on my pc monitor.

Do we need several Charles Bronsons in Guyana to deal with these low-life animals?

The guy rape the girl threatened to kill her, she is dead and when the prosecutor suggests no bail, you still put the guy back on the streets to rape someone else and threathe their life??????????? what is wrong with this picture.

Priya manickchand needs to organise group leaders to educate women about rape, what to do when they are rape. the community needs to be educate too because ppl tend to used it as negative way to get at the victims…
Women, when u are rape, there is nothing to be ashamed of. u have to be brave, face the culprit, look them in their eyes in court & tell them u will go down forever because you would not let him hurt another victim. the Magistrate on the other hand needs to cast the highest penalty allowed by law.
Women, you have to be stronger than u are when these things happen. it should not make u weaker. I fully understand her situation, she is young, she was threatened to be killed, she was dealing with not 1 but 2 life threatening issues and the pressures that were on her mind, the disgrace she suffered & would have suffered from others would have been ad devastating as could be. that sucker should be charge with rape, making deadly threat & manslaughter as he was the cause for her to take her own life. IF WAS MY RELATIVE I WOULD HAVE GAVE U SUCH A SLOW & PAINFUL DEATH U WOULD HAVE HAD TO SEE THAT GIRL TERRIFYING FACE THROUGHOUT YOUR ORDEAL WITH ME WHAT U DID TO HER

Animals ! that’s what they are , they think they can just walk into people’s house and rape their children . They shouldn’t give him bail , they should keep him in the lock up and beat him till he start praying , if he knows how to do that . I don’t mind if they beat scums like these in jail.

I said it before , It’s how we think , will build the country of break it .
Peace unto her soul. Condolences to the family.

It’s shame that this young lady had to die before this monster was charge. What’s going on with the legal system in Guyana? How can he be allowed to walk the street today.

  7. RS UNITED STATES says:

Let see if this working Judicial system that we have that everyone praises when Sharma is awarded judgment will work to protect this poor family. from the looks of it already noting will come out of this matter. you charge the perpetrator for rape while the child was in the hospital and later released him. When she died the system rearrested him and granted him bail. on 2 occasions he was freed after the allegation. That seems as if justice already went out the door. As it is with the common trend noting will come out of this and it will be dropped from the “watchful” eyes of the media

Yet another example of how females in Guyana are not valued.

WE HAVE THE POWER TO INCREASE OR DECREASE (not producing) THE POPULATION. SAY WHO CAN RUN THE COUNTRY BECAUSE WE OUT NUMBER MEN. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR NURTURING AND IN SOME CASES, EDUCATING THE NEXT PRESIDENT, LAWYER, DOCTOR ETC. Yet men treat women (no us because I won’t allow it) as if they are not humans. Do you think if it was a man this had happened to the woman would have got bail? Maybe the courts won’t believe him but if women were committing terrible acts to men the penalty would have been worse. All the laws are mostly made by men which has little or no positive impact on women.

why do these young girls always drop out of school as soon as the mother or father dies? Notice how these things only happen to uneducated women…

    • Respect GUYANA says:

What utter rubbish, what does her dropping out of school has to do with her being raped? You don’t know the circumstances of the family and what forced the child ot drop out of school. Anyone of us can be raped, the most educated of us, even you. A rapist do not ask us for our educational background before he commits the dastardly act. So cut the crap and stop trying to pretend you are better than others….

    • LoveGT 4 Real TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS says:

“Notice how these things only happen to uneducated women”………………..Are you kidding me?
Maybe that only happens on your planet, but not here on earth.

And don’t be passing judgment like that because sometimes when the the mom or dad dies it becomes necessary for a child to leave school and assume responsibility as provider. (Now I agree that this is not the best way to go, but in an economically challenged household, and in the absence of any Government sponsored assistance programs what else can these poor survivors do?)

      I await your brilliant response.

Woman to Woman: Her dropping out of school has nothing to do with him violating her human rights. Don’t judge her because you “seem” better off. You cannot speak against her unless you have walked in her shoes and you haven’t so….. NO MEANS NO!!! He has absolutely NO right to rape her and threaten her. Do you know what it is like to live with the memories of someone raping you? Some stink, yucky, awful person sharing the most intimate moment women so cherished and it’s totally against their will? Have you thought of the fear she would live in for the rest of her life knowing that she was violated? Whether she will be able to trust another man had she lived? Think before you judge woman!!

    • SaSaKoKo UNITED STATES says:

Just a guess, but maybe if one of your parents were to die, you might drop out to help with the family.

This is sad. And terrible. No one deserves to be raped. And rape can happen to anyone.

She was obviously greatly traumatized. I wish she had been able to run to her cousin’s house to hide and get help, instead of drinking poison. But she was obviously in deep pain and feeling great fear. People do recover from rape, but it is a long and difficult process, which requires support. Support she may not have had access too. Even if she ran away that day, she may have felt unsafe wherever and for the rest of her life. I can’t really know how she felt that day, but it would seem she felt sure she would end up dead anyway. How awful, that she felt her best alternative was to take her own life.

    • Love4all TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO says:

What utter nonsense? He violated her human rights! He should be punished accordingly not on the streets on bail. If he were to come to your doorstep next, you would be singing a different tune.

    • Satish UNITED KINGDOM says:

      Good point allan.
I have always maintained that the Forces have a RIGHT to be demoralised because they take life-threatening risks to apprehend the law-less and having done that, there is no real deterring punishment meted out by the courts.

Lawyers live a honeyed lifestyle while the Forces people barely get enough pay.
This is the hypocrisy of society.

30 year-old Premnauth Sugrim should face the death penalty for this.
