-suspect charged

A 17-year-old girl of Auchlyne, Corentyne ingested a poisonous substance and died after a man allegedly raped her three Sundays ago and threatened that he would return to kill her.

Dead is Cindy Mahadeo who was alone at home when the alleged incident occurred around 10 am. According to reports, after the man committed the act, he told her he would return at 1 pm to kill her and she fearfully ingested the poisonous substance and subsequently sent a text message to a cousin informing her that she had drunk poison. Mahadeo was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was admitted as a patient. She died on Thursday last.

On Friday, Premnauth Sugrim, said to be in his late 30s, was charged with rape at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
Sugrim had been arrested and released just after the incident but after Mahadeo died he was rearrested and charged.
Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant, objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and the fact that the defendant and the victim’s family live in the same area. However, Magistrate Krishndat Persaud placed the man on $150,000 bail.

Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told that when relatives got the news that Mahadeo had ingested poison and rushed over to her house they found her in a hammock vomiting. Relatives said they tried to question the girl about her reason for drinking the poison but she was apparently too “shame fuh tell we.” She later told the doctors about the alleged rape and the information was passed on to relatives.

Mahadeo later related to her mother, Algama Mahadeo, a domestic worker that her assailant had asked her for a drink of water and when she went into the kitchen to get it, he followed her, threw her on the floor and performed the act.

The girl told her mother that she fought him and gave him several scratches on his neck and he slapped her.
He also warned her not to tell anyone and even threatened that he would return at 1 pm to kill her. “After he tell she that she get scared and she drink the poison before one o’clock,” Ramdass told this newspaper yesterday.

Ramdass said she had made arrangements with the accused to renovate her kitchen and he was supposed to return in two weeks to start the work. “But he come before the two weeks and he know that me won’t a be home then,” she said.
Mahadeo who dropped out of school two years ago after her father died was the second of three children.

THIS WAS PREMEDITATED RAPE, as such the magistrate should have taken into consideration that the young woman died after the fact and refused bail, i’ve said it before it seems, this type of criminal behaviour is on the rise in guyana and a serious consideration must be undertaken to adjust the jailtime in relation to sentenceing and rape offenders recorded with picture posted for all to see.

  2. I recently did a Refugee case for a 15 year old girl in Canada who was raped by important people in Guyana. She could not get justice by the authorities in Guyana, that is why she seeks the protection of the Canadian Government.
Imagine, a foreigner gets more justice in a foreign land than in their own country of birth.

It’s time we started hanging these animals. They have no place in any civilized society.

These things can happen to anyone educated or not.
Children have to know that when certain bad things happen to them it is not their fault. And they can talk to someone without being blamed or made fun of. It is sad that they feel they have no other alternative but to kill themselves.
Only a few weeks ago a 12 yrs old girl hung herself and according to her parents she had no reason to do so. A few months ago a teenage boy did hung himself and they were saying it was because his father left home or something. Doesn”t the person who perform the autopsies even checked to see if these children might have been abused or molested? We have so many rapist and child molesters who are walking around in Guyana knowing that they can get away with anything.

Putting aside politics, race, religion, and the other factors that divide us, can anyone tell me if our ministers are actually aware of , or give a dam about , what is going on in our country?

One can easily predict that tomorrows issue is bound to carry a story of either murder, robbery, rape, death by vehicular accident, police brutality, a gross miscarriage of justice, and the list goes on. Yet in spite of this there seems to be no appropriate response from Government. ( could the wiretapping have prevented this rape and subsequent suicide?)

Instead, spend tax payers dollars on moderinsing the GPF, jettison those officers that have become irrelevant, invest in social programs that assist our women folk whenever they become victims of rampant abuse, institute programs that target the numerous delinquent juveniles before they are recruited by criminal gangs, etc. etc.)

Another young GUYANESE life snuffed out just like that, and it is highly likely that nothing will come out of this.

My condolences to this family…………………….I am truly sorry for their lost.

Will we as human beings stand up and watch this tradegy occur over ond over again…or will we stand up make a difference in another UNSPOKEN little girl voice.

Thanks makes me mad, this has happened to so many innocent girls…

    • SaSaKoKo UNITED STATES says:

Justice does not appear to be on the side of the innocent…

Why did they release him the first time.. when they could have checked for the scrapes on his neck (before they healed)?

And who is Ramdass? The article doesn’t mention who this is.. is that the landlord or something?

Also, I would like to add that while rape can and does happen to persons in any class. In no way does personal circumstance/class/education level make violence okay. It is true that those who are poorer and less educated often are more likely to be victimized, often because they are in less of a position to defend themselves and are forced to take greater risks because they have to. (They may need to feed their family and to do that may need work a job that puts one out late at night or live in a dangerous neighborhood because they don’t have other options). Also, it’s pathetic, but sometimes having money often buys justice. I don’t really know if that was at all a factor in this horrible crime.

May justice be served and this man be kept away from endangering other girls.

My condolences to Cindy’s family and friends. Rest In Peace.

My condolences goes out to the family on the rape and death of your daughter, may you find comfort from this tragedy that have befallen you. I can’t understand why the magistrate gave this beast bail, all rapes should be an unbailable offence this is the only way to show that it’s a serious offense.

  9. blahblah UNITED STATES says:

At the end of the day,it is still an allegation and yet to be proven in court. You guys can rage all you want, but until there is evidence to convict this man, then we can talk about castrating him.

Most of you who babble castration and the man ain’t even face the courts yet,all living in countries where the rule of the law is very important. and no one should be condemn until proven guilty.

I am very sorry for what happen to this girl, but let us not fall victims to these beastly act and call for vigilante. That happen with the phantoms and see where it took us…
