A policeman working at a barbecue held at Canefield, East Canje Berbice on Tuesday night was stabbed in the chest with a broken bottle after he warned a patron about throwing lighted squibs.

Constable 17310 Williams was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he received medical attention for his injuries. His attacker is in police custody assisting with investigations.

Police last evening said that they are investigating an incident that occurred at about 8.30 pm during which a police rank on duty was stabbed in his chest with a broken bottle.
Investigations have so far revealed that Constables 17310 Williams and 19185 Fredericks were on duty at the barbecue when they observed a man throwing a lighted squib into the crowd of patrons. Constable Williams then warned the man to desist from his actions.
Another man who was in his company objected and began to verbally abuse the rank during which he chucked Constable Williams.

The man who was objecting later ran into his residence nearby and returned with two broken bottles and “unexpectedly” stabbed Constable Williams to his chest. He then attempted to stab Constable Fredericks who discharged a round from his service revolver into the air, whereupon the man dropped the broken bottles and escaped. He was later arrested and is in police custody.

    No respect for law enforcement.

  2. SandHurst First GUYANA says:

How the hell can you attack a police officer….dam it, i forget this is the Wild Wild West and anything can happen. From what i have read i am of the view that this man was probably “high” from alcohol. What if he had a gun? Now that the police have him in custody they should know what to do with him.

    • SandHurst Firsrt, have you ever taught that this man must have been defending himself against what the call a roughing up from this POLICE MAN OR MAY BE THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS he was probably afraid of being tortue by some one in B

    • Satish UNITED KINGDOM says:

I agreet with you SandHurst First.
That party-goer stabbed Constable Williams in his chest and then he attempted to stab Constable Fredericks who discharged a round from his service revolver into the air. Fredericks’ mistake is that he should have fired on the party-goer.

There is clear intent here that both Williams’ and Fredericks’ lives were under threat.

after going to the many BBQ in gt, i am sure the police story is not through, he must be probally drinking and haveing fun, and after getting high, wants to enforce his dominant presence.ADVISE TO THE POLICE CHIEF, whenever there is a BBQ in a village, security should be provided by officers from a different division from the one that is holding the event.

    • coolieman UNITED STATES says:

What double standards are you implying they should torture him?

    • donnette UNITED STATES says:

Highly doubt that he was defending himself Reverend Gary. In fact i don’t know there is such a thing as defending yourself when it comes to law enforcement. They are there to protect and serve, not to be attacked. Also, don’t you think this seems a little premeditated since this guy had enough time to think as he went home to retrieve a weapon?

  3. guy123 UNITED KINGDOM says:

Men have been killed for less than that,he was lucky it was that policeman,he fired his weapon in the air….I have noticed that in Berbice somehow there’s very little respect for police officers!

  4. pking UNITED STATES says:

Great demonstration of self- control by the police.

  5. Fulano de Tal UNITED STATES says:

Nice story. The attacker’s lucky he wasn’t in Buxton or Agricola, he’d be smelling daisies by the roots. Nonetheless, just a trip to the Brickdam lock-ups will earn him the ‘roughing up’ he’s earned himself.

    • bishnu R CANADA says:

      BRICKDAM LOCK UP?
      THE INCIDENT IS IN BERBICE
HE AND HIS FRIEND SHOULD BE SENT TO JAIL THIS IS TOTAL DISRESPECT FOR THE LAW.
? ARE POLICE OFFICERS SENT ON DUTY AT BBQ.?
CAN SN ASK THE MINISTER FOR AN STATEMENT ON HOW OR WHAT ARE THE PROCUDERS OF OBTAINING A PERMIT TO HOLD A BBQ. SO AS WE CAN BE CLEAR ON WHAT IS OR IS NOT HAPPENING IN GUYANA TODAY?.

    • briantee VIRGIN ISLANDS, BRITISH says:

I am not the biggest fan of the GPF but at the same time I do not condone a civilian atacking a member of the force with a weapon and causing bodily harm. As you said he is lucky that he is not dead but also as you said what he receives at Brickdam will be what he has earned and it will be well deserved.

Just hope he can take it!!!

  6. moodygirl ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA says:

it seems that these bar- b -que have alot of these incidents. the police need to look into these activities that is becoming very prevelant in guyana

  7. John Smith GUYANA says:

Well, well!! This seems to be the thing at these bar-b-ques, loud noise and roudy and disrespectful people. Patrons drink to a stuper and want to do anything they want. He is lucky he was not shot by the police, he better count his luck stars he is still alive.

We condemn the police ever so often because of those rotten ones, I thing Constable Fredricks could have shot that drunk lunatic in his defence but he showed restraint.

  8. fineman cousin SAINT LUCIA says:

east canje is a know support base of the government,so tell me which police in his right sense would shoot directly at a person from these areas, i do wonder even if the individual is in custody.

  9. D11N COLOMBIA says:

Showas there is still some restrained cops around …a few…He needs to thank his lucky stars, he is still breathing …could have been “cop shot and killed attacker at BBQ”….anyhow he is not in the clear yet ….hopes he makes it through the ‘roughing up’.

  10. Well, he will be in the lock ups where the police could have their ways with him. Then the people will be complain about police brutality.
