Nineteen persons were arrested for throwing squibs in Alexander Village on Tuesday night and a quantity of squibs were seized, police said last evening.
According to press release those arrested were placed on bail to return and charges will be laid shortly.
A police press release said that ranks were on duty at a Diwali activity which was held at the Mandir in Cross Street, Alexander Village when they observed a number of squibs being set off at various areas within Alexander Village.
There was a crowd of approximately 3,000 persons on the roadways, who were there to witness the event, which included the lighting up of the Mandir and other buildings.
The ranks responded and managed to arrest a total of 19 persons and seize a quantity of squibs, the release said adding that ranks also received and responded to a report that during this period Renita Richardson of Hunter Street, Albouystown, had collapsed as a result of one of the squibs being thrown at her.
She was taken to the Georgetown Hospital by the police where she received medical treatment and was sent away.
Further, the release said the flashing light unit of the Police Force vehicle PGG 6210, which was being used to patrol the area (Alexander Village), was damaged by a squib that was hurled at the vehicle.
An official of the Mandir reported to the police that the noise from the squibs was affecting the conduct of the function.
However, the police ranks made every effort to stop the use of squibs by members of the public in the area at the time.
“The Guyana Police Force wishes to advise the general public that the possession and use of squibs is a breach of the law and action will be taken against persons found in default”, the release warned.
The squib throwing during Diwali has been a recurrent problem for the mandir.

WWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW, WHAT A TURN AROUND!!!! LAST YEAR THE POLICE JUST STOOD THERE AND WATCH AS THE VILLAGERS THREW SQUIBS ALL AOVER AND DID NOTHING. Good job guys.
Sandhurst, you know that it is foolish for people to use any form of fire crackers in Guyana, because it sounds like gunfire and therefore people should beware that if there is an attack anywhere people would not be alert to what is going on…yet the very people who should see that the law against squibs are upheld are so stupid and greedy ,that they continue to import it into the country…and they are the ones when attacked by bandits, want the police to respond..pronto..greed is mashing up Guyana!!
……..i was home two years ago…….it was not nice to see these under age kids with grownup engage with the squib business in west berbice…….i spoke to them……some stop!!…….some continue!!……..the day is coming when we will pick up a few eye bolls and fingers that represent the new trend of diwali
I WOULD HAVE FEEL MORE HAPPY TO SEE THAT THEY CAUGHT MURDERS AND CRIMINALS INSTEAD.
Alexander village is a place where i grew up,that place was the place to celebrate any festival. Now look at it no one can have a peacefull celebation without any crime. The presdent should do something about that.
IS that the reason why no patrol officer was available to come to my residences in Duncan Street Kitty on the same day when i called to report some ill-mannered youngsters who were throwing squibs and firecrackers at my dog, at passerbys, and vehicles on the road?????????????? How a shame?????? I called Kitty police at 11am….they didnt have vehicle available at that time to come….so i had no choice but to endure the rude verbal abuse from kids way younger than myself…..i called back at 5.30 again….they were to send a patrol…..and to this day, 2 days after i still have not seen one officer to investigate the matter.
hey, when last u been to China?? they got squibs in all fashion and color.
Could somebody tell me what ACTION is taken against the persons selling these things????
’cause I still see the vendors peddling them all over town.
Then they would want to justify their action by telling you they only trying to make a living…..
Hog Wash!!!
…such a lawless country…
…sigh…
In the first place, why the Government gives licence to import those firecrackers/squibbs?
They are smuggled in.
its de ghetto ppl from the back who come to the front an do this nonsence. them even makin the value of property in that area fall.
That area?????
If it’s against the law to have them in your posession and use them ; then why are they being imported and sold on the open market?
If it’s a contraband item them have them removed from the source……. the sellers!
soon time every thing will be crime in guyana ( even going to latrin)
Relax yourself, Fineman dead, squibs can throw now without fear or favor!!
What’s the difference between a squibs and firecrackers, or the bigger one m-80?
Well you will be a sad man for a very very longgggggggggg time!!
lambada…you want to see murderers and criminals caught? You have two choices, either you go to Guyana and help your government by enlisting in the GPF and while you are at it get some of your family and friends to do the same…or…You help to vote this government OUT next election!!!
Is lighting squib a crime???
