The opposition PNCR says that Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and the government owe a “proper and credible” explanation for the erratic and unreliable supply of electricity in Guyana.

In a press statement yesterday, the party said that “none of the official statements offered so far have logically explained the daily unscheduled blackouts all over Guyana, from the Corentyne Coast to Essequibo.”

According to the PNCR, in December 2007 when GPL promised Guyanese a ‘Black Christmas’, President Bharrat Jagdeo had made “some grandiose announcements and promises,” and  Guyanese were told that new generators had been ordered and would have arrived by special shipment to ensure a bright Christmas.

The nation, the party said further,  was also informed that GPL was being reorganized, staff reduced and greater efficiency would have been achieved while a new special maintenance schedule would have been observed.

The PNCR argued that  it follows that with increased generators   there should have been a greater opportunity to accelerate the maintenance programme, but less than a year later GPL is holding Guyanese to ransom again and businesses are being seriously affected as productive activities are stymied.

The party noted that last week health facilities were adversely affected with Fort Wellington Hospital in total blackout for the entire evening on  October 19 and without a functioning generator. On the same day, the PNCR added, the entire Corentyne Coast from No 51 Village to New Amsterdam, the entire West Coast Berbice and East Coast Demerara from Rosignol to Plaisance were without electricity.

The opposition party asked what logical explanation could there be for this state of affairs and queried whether it is that so much unbudgeted money was spent on CARIFESTA X that none was available to purchase fuel? The party also questioned whether it is that the promised maintenance never took place or that there was no money to purchase the spares? The PNCR commented too  on GPL’s  policy of “indiscriminate dismissals of experienced employees” and suggested that this may have resulted in a shortage of relevant skills that are essential to the effective maintenance of the system.

The party also asked about the “real reasons for the non-completion of the new generator at Kingston” as GPL admitted Wednesday.

A few months ago, the release observed, the PNCR had raised the issue of GPL in Parliament and advocated that in the public interest there should be an investigation. But similar to the ruling party’s  behaviour regarding the torture motion, it “rejected the suggestion and commended GPL for the wonderful work that they were doing.”

“Guyanese are today reaping the results of that folly (and)  GPL and the government must therefore come clean and let the people of Guyana know the truth,” the PNCR concluded.

Furthermore, ur usually the first one to comment but usually very shallow. Be constructive in ur comments, its obvious u have a lot of time. Add some substance to ur comments.

The great Abraham Lincoln once said, “you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you cannot fool ALL of the people ALL of the time” … the PPP government has been amazing in dispelling that notion in their dealings with the guyanese people .. less electricity more blackouts .. well .. they promised a ‘black’ christmas but the forgot three letters in the same word ‘out’ .. blackout christmas .. and the beat goes on ..

Huh! This article is captioned “PNCR calls on gov’t to explain erratic power supply”. How about if it was captioned “The “Intermittent Showers” Party fell of the Governing Party’s parade – again bordering on “erratic power supply”! ;-) :-D

Colt –are you kidding and have you lost your mind . Corbin bought a barge that never worked (white elephant ) –he should have been investigated then . He should be ashamed of their track record . I studied in High school and university with ‘ Bottle lamps ” —no power for days , drank hot water –which sometimes I had to walk to the Blacka–(Lamaha Canal ) for a bucket of water , and had to endure the stifling heat . Thanks God my kid did not had to endure that .

According to the intelligence from the “round table” this has to be the result when the almighty Government feels that it does not wish to have any “business relationships” with folks who were once supporters of the L. F. S. Burnham Administration and their business associates. Well, you get what you “vote” and “pay” for; and, this is “awe” Guyana! Does anyone remembers the acronym – COMECA (Communist Economic Community)!

….. here’s how de pnc can be part of good governance ,, make a list of all de tings dat wrang in de nation ,, then prioritise the top ten ,, and from the 10 ,, pick five that need “emergency surgery” and pressure de govt ,, to apply the needed blood to resuscitate the soon to die service ,, and after success with the first 5 ,, follow the pattern of the first five ,, and continue to show ,, that u r indeed sincere abt ur rhetoric abt governance !!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Dude CANADA says:

This opposition is so tarnished that its lacks ligitimacy when demanding answers to issues affecting society. The problem is that the PNC ruled with an iron fist and gave no explanation or apologies for it’s shameful records. Remember what happened when Trotman said that the PNC should apologise for its past – and this was shen he was in the party.

We need the AFC to lead from the front on issues affecting society, not PNC. Then we can back them up.

The PNC should dissolve the party and take an infinite vacation.

    • Kaieteur Gold UNITED STATES says:

He “Dude”! What ya talking about de PNC-R and de AFC – they are of the same kilt of cloth; and, ya don’t know anything about de “FORMATION” of de PNC then why don’t you just keep quiet.

  9. YoungBoi CANADA says:

The PNC should be the last to be asking anyone for an answer to anything. When they were in power it was the same damn thing. What goes around comes around…KARMA is a bitch…

IN THOSE DAYS THERE WERE THE THREE B’S……..BURNHAM

      BLACK MARKET

MY FRIENDS , ITS BY FAR BETTER NOW THAN THEN WHERE THAT IS CONCERNED……AFTER ALL THE OPPOSITION IS ONLY THERE TO FIND FAULTS ON THE VERY THINGS THAT THEY WERE FAILING TO DO…….

  10. Durbie UNITED STATES says:

We will never learn, Government is not the answer to our economic plight. Is there any Government official in Guyana currently or the past ever run a successful business? I guess not, these folks are politicians know nothing of business. Energy supplies by both parties PNC and PPP are abject failure because of the communist ideology. Energy problem we are facing need market solution. GPL is a quasi private enterprise, Government should divest all its interest and free the Company to decide how they will re-capitalize and make profit. If Guyanaese want reliable electricity supply then they must pay for it. Currently electricity is subsidize in Guyana and therefore the company is not enough profit to invest back into the company. We guyanese want evry thing for free. There is no free lunch anywhere you always get what you pay for.
