– President endorses US Democratic candidate
President Bharrat Jagdeo said that if he had the opportunity he would campaign for the US Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Barack Obama, stating that the senator embodies a collective of admirable ideals.
He said that an Obama presidency signifies a thrust forward from a sordid past in US history; in reference to the Jim Crow laws of racial segregation in some parts the country.
He noted that an Obama presidency would be of great symbolic value, but pointed out that the US senator’s message is universal and has never pandered to a partisan interest.
“I am pleased to know that the son of an African immigrant can be the next President of the United States but outside of that Obama represents so much more. This is a man with a first-rate education who favoured community work over Wall Street,” the President said.
Jagdeo was at the time responding to a question from the local media about the upcoming US elections and his view of the US democratic senator during a press briefing at State House yesterday. He told reporters that he is rooting for an Obama win, adding that he has urged the local disapora to vote for the democratic senator come November 4. He also expressed hope that the entire Caribbean disapora would support Obama.
Jagdeo said that Obama has a certain amount of empathy that is rare among US politicians, adding that Obama is likely to understand better the issues facing small, developing countries like Guyana. He pointed to Obama’s humble upbringing and his work with everyday, ordinary people.
The President added that Obama’s exposure to Islam should also be recognized as important factor given the continued vilification of Islam that is often expressed in some quarters.
Obama is bidding to become the first African-American president in the US after defeating Senator Hillary Clinton for the democratic nomination. He is running against Republican senator John McCain for the presidency.

Once again Jagdeo has put his foot in his mouth. Its true that (from all looks of it) that Obama will win but he should have wait untill the fat lady sings. What if MaCain gets an upset victory and decides to ill threat Guyana who will we blame then???
what ill treat guyana? the US already ill treated guyana and guyanese for a solid 28 years…like yuh fuget or wat?????
And don’t forget the ELECTORAL COLLEGE ominously waiting to put anything right that they thinks need righting. The founding fathers were reaaaaaaaaaaly far-seeing.
SANDHURST, IF YOU WAS NOT CONCEIVED DURING THOSE YEARS, THEN YOU SHOULD STUDY HISTORY. THAT IS THE REASON WHY THE PNC IS CALLED HISTORY, AND THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REPEAT IT.
Re: “Guyana needs an Obama”! Well, they had one already – L. F. S. Burnham. ;-)
Re: “Evil Blind!!
I wasn’t even conce(i)ved then.” LOL! :-D
I will say something and do not get me wrong. I do not think President Jagdeo is a bad guy. But I do think, he is not the (person or persons) with the real power. So even if he wants to do his best his hands are tied. Please don’t ask me, who is running the show.
Guyana needs King Jagdeo another two terms come on board SANDHURST
Sandhurst –let me inform you –as you claimed that you were not conceived then . The Us with the help of the CIA put Burnham in power after Cheddi Jagan who was the Premeir of the country after Independance sine it was thought that Cheddi was Socialist /Communist and was associating with Russia (who at the time was at odds with the USA .) . After Burnham failed miserably –the Us stepped in and through Carter —a FREE and FAIR ELECTION was then held and the rest is history .
Jagdeo knows a winner when he sees one .
Sandhurst –there was nothing fishy about when jagan was in power—it was just that the Usa was not in support of the socialist /communist policy . You claimed that you got a distinction in history –Who made Burnham a man of the Caribbean —he was dispised and hated throughout the Caribbean and the commonweath and the world at large for being corrupt .
Jagdeo should take a lot of notes from Obama and see what true DEMOCRACY is, what a real LEADER is all about, what a FREE and FAIR elections looks like, what UNITY is all about and what a real man can achieve if he sets his mind towards that goal.
free and fair elections in US huh???you better check again and see how Bush got into power….the court didnt put Jagdeo in power….its the people that elected him to power through free fair and transparent elections…again yuh fugetting….
I am sure Jagdeo is no Obama and could never be……. Obama will not tolerate.
(1) Dictatorships
(2) Extra judicial murders
(3) Narco Polotics and Corruption
(4)Political interference of the Judiciary
(5) Mass killings where no inquest are tolerated
(6) Jailing of people for years that do not agree with a political party in power.
(7)Torture of citizens.
(8) Ministers who break the law without and prosecution
(9) Sexual predators in high circles
The list goes on and on.
In fact Obama will reject Jagdeo’s endorsement.
there is no need for jagdeo to take obama notes when he[jagdeo] was democraticlly elected to to lead guyana, obama will probally have to ask jagdeo for advice, sandhurst do not jump on your ship when you know it will sink, hoyte think he can win election when he give in to carter center to have free and fair election, you know the results.
Hey Sandhurst, how can you change the name from whatever to blind?Lol!
Thank you SandHurst First
what are you saying, read, read, read.
The PPP was ELECTED (and not SELECTED) by the people held through FREE and FAIR Elections and observed by the Carter Center . The only thing that Hoyte did to help was that he ALLOWED free and fair elections to be held . Get the facts right kid .
Sandhurst -, Guy123, Drump change –you are too young to know this –as you claim to —my kid had to grow up eating Rice Flour and Cassava Bread every day for years . We had to line up for everything –even the basic necessities –Sugar , soap , salt , oil . We had to go to a place called GMC and WRSM and line up for hours to buy a hamper containing those items . I lined up for 10 hrs to buy 1 loaf of bread for my kid . Thankd God that my son is healthy and now enjoys the good life in the US .And I can go on and on . What burnham did was unforgivable to the nation children . Tell me 5 good things that he did and I will match it with 50 evils (10 to 1) .
Hey Sandy , Nothing ain’t free and fair anymore , Get used to the word ” corruption .” Obama ain’t take the seat yet to rule , how you saying he’s a real leader. Don’t think that the U.S is still paradise , where everything is perfect and just to enlighted you bro. Obama is just at the forefront , it’s the godfathers behind the scene that runs the country . Politics creates an illusion and directs our thoughts, to make us think that the guy that holds the seat is the the ONE ! Bush goes to the queen for the final say , so does the governer general and PM of Canada . So tell me who really running the countries ?
Regardless of all the wonderful word by Jagdeo, what remains an unanswered question is whether Guyana under the current trend will in future have a non Indo-Guyanese or non PPPC President. I also wondered if those Indo-Guyanese living in USA trained in their Guyana enclave to have a peculiar view of Afro-Guyanese will vote for Obama. What will be responsible for such epiphany.
Similar socio-economic and political conditions as extant in USA, should ever occur in Guyana will never be conducive enough for a Guyana “Obama”
AS A GUYANESE I CONTEND COLLECTIVELY WE HAVE TO AWAKEN FROM OUR SLUMBER.
…..i love your view point…………the ppp has engage it’s constituency with a funny up bring that causes them a lot of problem and they only get to understand how bad it is when they come to America……obama is no different to an ordinary black Guyanese growing up in Guyana……my grandmother was born to an east indian from India ……her mother was a black woman…..she had a sister who was born to an east Indian woman who was her father’s wife…..both sisters live and played together but it was tearful for my grandmother who shared an obama type life with her grandchildren…..if the ppp constituency continue to do and think the way they think …..too band for them …….we have to leave them with there head in the sand….. …america is changing
THE ONLY NON- INDIAN GUYANESE WILL HAVE TO BE DR. ROGER LUNCHEON OR SAMUEL HINDS. GOT IT———-
WHAT< vote for a pnc after 28 years. one who experience it must have to be out of their minds to vote pnc.
Who cares? No, seriously who the heck cares?
I don’t!!!
How can you compare Obama as “a real LEADER”… Obama is just a Senator… Jagdeo is a PRESIDENT who had lead a coutry for years with proven results and recognitions both domestically and internationally. Obama may prove himself later ..as of now let’s wait until Tuesday..
Are You trying to compare the United States Of America with Guyana ?
its true that its better to wait until tuesday. But check DE MAN he came from an ordinary family just as YOU JAGDEO and MYSELF DE MAN has the majority of the votes in many of the BUSH states. As you said lets wait until TUESDAY I will be keeping my fingef CROSSED!!!! myself and many others be it north or south african, muslim or hindu we in Europe is hoping and praying for OBAMA.
harrynauth….I don’t think you have to wait until Tuesday…I get the feeling that you tell yourself that you already KNOW what the outcome will be!!!!!!!!!
Aren’t senators leaders too??? didnt he had to campaign to become a senator….doesn’t he needs followers in order to have a dream???
Harrynauth Singh get a life bro.!!!
Harry Singh!! Get it right, not lead the country, It’s more like dictate the country.
harrynauth….Today i Wednesday!
HS,You are right to ask the question. How can any one compare OBAMA to JAGDEO. He may be a President yes but OBAMA has more education and commonsence than HIM. what he did for his fellow men as a Senator is more than Jagdeo did for the paeople of his country. A President who does not provide his country with food and public transp , and does not gave a dam about the poor and the elderly . you should be ashame to say how can amy one compare him to OBAMA. OBAMA is for the people Jagdeo is for him self and others like him
Look who’s talking about democracy.
I think he means the “DEMONS are SCAREY”!!!
Get It???
You have to have leaderships ability to raise 66 million dollars
in the month of August and 150 million in September.
You have to have leaderships ability to have a “PAID STAFF” of
10,000 people and over 100,000 volunteers accross the United
States, what we are seeing from Senitor Barack Obama is real
organization skills and leadership ability, you may not like him,
but the world are hungry for CHANGE,
If you are Guyanese living in Richmond Hill N.Y and you are
a supporting of John Mc Cane no problem, you are so impress with
Jagdeo proven results and you are just like me, out of (Guyana)
Mr Harrynauth Singh.
WELL SAID. OPEN THEIR EYES FOR THEM. McPain’s campaign preaching “more for the rich” cannot get the funding Obama got even with his views of taxing the more wealthy (which isn’t rocket science, you make more you pay more since it proves you exploit the resources more) & Obama has money to burn for these elsection.
BARACK IS THE MAN. & even though he is running for the presidency I find it utterly insulting for him to be compared to the bannas running Guyana.
only in richmond hill eh????ah tell ya…..
……big jag now trying to cast influence on guyanese in the diaspora ……why not start looking at the root of domestic violence and the way women are been brutalize then address that first…….then the quality of gpl generation service to the people which have an effect on the quality of Guyanese life…..like a man being rob of his goal teeth …… a woman found in a canal …….quality of water !!…….deal with the bread and butter issue at home leave us politics to us…..you cuss we out enough …..
Guyanese needs to work for the BREAD and then they will will get the BUTTER , they cant believe that KING BHARRAT will have to do everything for them
mr jagdeo in the remaining years of your presaidency please try to emulate the good points of obama you enumerated. guyanese would thank you.
Time to put a socialist in the White House.
