In an effort to provide relief to Cuba after the recent natural disasters which hit the country, Guyana has donated 150,000 tonnes of white milled rice.

The hurricanes which swept through Cuba caused severe damage. As a result, Guyana has chosen to provide some relief, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Elisabeth Harper said.

Six containers of rice were loaded and ready at the John Fernandes Wharf to be shipped to Cuba. The activity is being handled by the Guyana Rice Development Board, a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said.

Pedro Artega, the Cuban Ambassador, was present during the packing yesterday and expressed gratitude on behalf of Cuba for Guyana’s support in their time of the need.
Cuba is now under threat from tropical storm Paloma.

This was a very good thing to do, we must remember when we had the flood in 2005 how many donations from our sister countries we received

There are many Guyanese in Guyana who are still hungry and cannot buy a pint of rice since it shot up to $140. What they can do is donate a bag of rice to those who are really in need of help.

well said sandhurst, but as for guyana, no; you give to the poor and you have to give to the rich, if not then you will find the PNC crying out the RACE ISSUE. If and whenever guyana can afford it , then we can implement the food stamp system. but we will still have the RACE ISSUE so this is very typical.

It’s good to give, battered by so much natural disasters and a Harricane(·,·) pending, country that has it’s Habitants/population in virtual starvation/misery for 50 years, like Guyana for 28 years.

  4. Omkar Suchit CANADA says:

Good to see Guyana reciprocating for all of the assistance Cuba has provided over the years. We should also remember the assistance Guyana provide to Grenada when they were hit by a hurricane. Being poor does not negate the ability to help.

    Well done all.

Why bring politics into it? Doesn’t your religion/morals teach you to help your neighbours? Or is this also lost in Guyana?
