I never met Mr. de Caires, but I'm such a huge cricket fan, and to see Mike Atherton sacrificing his journalism and commentary duties to be with the family is incredible. He has mentioned the fact that his father-in-law was his inspiration to enter the world of print journalism (Mike's also a television journalist). When I read those wonderful tributes about David de Caires, my heart was truly touched. My condolences to the family. RIP David.

As a relative and dear friend from our earliest childhood, I feel an emptiness with his passing. Perhaps the following Anglican hymn by Sir Cecil Spring Rice sums up his devotion to his native land:

" I vow to thee my Country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there's another Country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace."

One would wish that the final line of this hymn was appropriate to Guyana ! Perhaps some day ?

Farewell to the great David de Caires. I hope we as a nation can establish a national award for free speech and social justice in his honour, named after him.
Anyone wanting to pay tribute to this amazing son of the Guyana soil can do so at the Facebook Group "Tribute to the great David de Caires".
