A man who allegedly assaulted a policeman was granted bail in the sum of $15,000 yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Patrick Thomas of Good Fortune, West Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charges of assaulting a special constable and disorderly behaviour in public view.

According to reports, on November 12 on Water Street, police acting on information received went in search of Thomas and found him at Stabroek Market.

They questioned him about a matter and then informed him that they would conduct a search on his person. During the search, Thomas allegedly pushed the policeman’s hand away and made use of indecent language.

However, Thomas stated that he did not assault the policeman but “they assaulted me cause they drag me on de road by Fogarty’s.”

Magistrate Williams-Hatmin then entered a not guilty plea for Thomas.
The magistrate subsequently placed Thomas on $15,000 bail and ordered that he appear again in court on December 9.

I do not agree with anyone assaulting a policeman, but the man said that all he did was to push the policeman’s hand away and behaved in a disorderly manner. The magistrate entered a not guilty plea.He also said that the policeman assaulted him. There in no doubt that people have lost respect for policemen for various reasons. However I do expect the punishment should fit the crime.Do not think that he is an Anaconda,or else he would have been refused bail.Maybe he is one of those tourists invading Georgetown, that the Crime Chief spoke about.Hope he enjoys his stay in Georgetown.Lucky not to be put in that Brick…..,forgot the name of the place.Should change the name to Brumms Hide Out.
