According to a press release Gwendolyn Young of Block E, South Sophia was the recipient of the gift. The release noted that the centre is sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy. On Mercy Day the church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy and Sisters of Mercy worldwide by joining with “their associates and co-workers in thanking God for His continuous Mercy and blessings and recommitting their lives to the service of the poor and vulnerable.” The sisters contributed foodstuff and other household items for the hamper.

The centre also seeks to develop the gifts and talents of youth who have not benefited from the formal education system. They are encouraged to develop a social conscience and to reach out to needy persons. The centre is located at Farmer’s Plot, South Sophia and its agenda includes programmes such as general construction, catering and home management and child care and care of the elderly.
