A Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice man was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Thursday night after being severely beaten, allegedly by an official of a community policing group in the area.

Naipaul Ramphaul of Bush Lot was admitted to the medical institution with a broken arm, head injuries and cuts about the body. He is in a stable condition in the open ward but is crying out in pain, his sister, Gaitrie Ramphaul said.

Gaitrie told Stabroek News that it was after 6:30 pm on Thursday that she received a call from a policewoman. She said that her daughter answered the phone and was told that Ramphaul had been badly beaten up and Gaitrie should go and identify him. Gaitrie recalled that she went on the Bush Public Road, where the incident had occurred and saw a crowd gathered there. “Me see plenty, plenty blood around me brother and me start crying”, said Gaitrie.

She said that the police arrived at about the same time and she asked a resident to take her sibling to the Fort Wellington Hospital. Upon arrival there, the doctor looked at Ramphaul and ordered that he be transferred to the GPH due to the severity of his injuries.

This was done and he was admitted. His right arm was broken and he suffered several large cuts about his head and body. Gaitrie said that his legs, ribs, back and other parts of his body were severely aching.

The woman said that persons on the scene had told her that the assailant, who is reportedly a member of the community policing group in the area, used an axe handle to beat Ramphaul. He was reportedly heading to the police station at the time while Ramphaul was returning home after going to the service station to buy kerosene. The assailant was later taken into police custody. It is not clear if he has been charged.

Gaitrie said that the same man was involved in similar incidents before and persons were terrified of him. She said she knew of no problem that her brother had with him but while beating him, the assailant reportedly accused him of stealing his duck. The woman said that she wants justice for her brother and she intends to follow-up the matter.

John..the man is an advantage taker..after inflicting so much pain on a man that may be innocent ,this man should be arrested by the police annointed back with an axe handle and then face the law for another punishment ( if that is how you treat people when they allegedly steel ducks)..

  2. amen-ra UNITED STATES says:

This matter should be investigated by the gpf, and if one is guilty of assaulting naipaul he should be brought up on charges.

    • Ulric UNITED STATES says:

An axe handle was used to commit agravated assault Lambada. That is a criminal offense. To top it off, the instrument was not issued by the Police and was not an authorized equipment. That makes the use of the axe handle illegal LAMBADA. Further, the accused was acting in the capacity of a civilian. Yuh want fuh hear mo? ISNM

  3. SWAT UNITED STATES says:

This was a very brutal beating this assailant inflicted on Mr. Ramphaul . This man is nothing but a “loose cannon” and a “maniac” and needs to be taken off the streets and placed behind bars. And SHAME on the doctor for not treating this man’s wounds or stabilizing him before transferring him to GPH. And what is the purpose of the Fort Wellington Hospital when it is not fulfilling its function as a hospital – it should be called a CLINIC instead of a hospital? I pray Mr. Ramphaul recover from his injuries and not lose his life due to substandard treatment..

  4. SINCE WHEN THE COMMUNITY POLICIG GROUP HAS BEEN AUTHORIZE TO BEAT PERSONS, HERE IS ANOTHER ALLEDGED INCIDENT WHERE A MAN WAS BADLY BEATEN AND BROKEN UP FOR ACCCUSING HIM OF STEALING A DUCK. CHARGES SHOULD BE LAID AGAINST YOU. AND THE GUYANA POLICE FORCE SHOULD BE VERY AND EXTRA CAREFUL WHO IS HEADING POLICICNG GROUPS AND MONITOR THEIR PERFORMANCE, THEY ARE OPERATING LIKE THEY ARE THE LAW OR EVEN ABOVE, WHY BEAT A MAN OVER A DUCK, GO AND HELP CATCH SOME OF THOSE NOTORIOS CRIMINALS

  10. Observerfromadistance UNITED STATES says:

Another crime for the Guyana KeyStone Cops which they probably will be unable to solve since the alleged assailant is a PPP appointed community policing official .. in which they have it all wrong again .. community policing means assisting the Guyana Keystone Police, not appointing yourself a policeman so you can take the law into your own hands .. but then again .. in Guyana .. who knows .. anyone can take the law into their own hands anyway !!
