“They throw away meh music set and start beating me in meh head with glass bottles cause I din wan turn off de song,” said Farouk Hamid from his bed in the Male Open Ward at the George-town Public Hospital yesterday afternoon.
Hamid, 26, of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara was crying out in pain as his bed was being adjusted by a nurse yesterday. He related to Stabroek News that he was at a saloon at Bee Hive, East Coast Demerara drinking with two men when “one ah dem sey that he nah like de song playing on me music set and he tell me fuh turn it off”.
Hamid said that when he refused to turn off his CD player, the man scrambled it out of his hands, ran to the door and threw it on the road. He stated that the other man then got up and grabbed him and when the one who had thrown the CD player into the street rejoined them, the two men picked up a glass bottle each and dealt him several blows to his head and body.
Hamid noted that when he fell to the ground, the men continued their assault and one of the men later “bruk a glass bottle and start fuh cut me all over me hands with it”. He said that he soon fell unconscious in the saloon and “this morning I wake up in de hospital”.
Hamid stated that he knew his attackers well – had known them for over a year and he reported the incident to a policeman who had visited him at the hospital but did not know if either of his attackers had been apprehended.

This is just another sad side effect of alcoholism in the Guyanese subculture. If only there could be more education from home, to school, to media, about the devastating effects of alcohol, then some will wake up and see the reality of what “rum” really does.
For those making fun about it, do you remember seeing your neighbor beat his wife, your father staggering home and not able to teach you about the principles and values of life/ Do you remember what your uncle was like? It’s not so funny now, or is it?
Poor man, I wonder if he’ll still like the song when he recovers? I wonder what song it was?
After looking at his picture, and hearing of the licks he got, I dont tink he gun remember wa he muma name , muchless the song.
very funny he should get some royalty
People please, this is not about Islam or loud music. What you all been reading?
The man play his song and get the daylights beat out of him cause some idiots did not like the song he was playing.
Now the courts will deal with them accordingly.Let’s wait and see the outcome.A prison term will be approriate in this case.
TO THE ONE THAT IS “CONCERNED” WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO STAY THAT ABOUT GUYANA? IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO GIVE THE COUNTRY A BAD REPUTATION AND IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO GO TO GUYANA AND SHOW OFF YOUR IGNORANCE WHY?? …BUT …IF ONE OF THESE DAYS YOU GET YOURSELF THROWN OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND YOUR BED OF ROSES AND HAVE NO PLACE ELSE TO GO..THEN HAHAHAHAA IT’S BACK TO THE SAME “BACKWARD AND SICK PLACE” AS YOU SO PUT IT…
Guyana is a lawless country; Georgetown is a stinking, fetid place where very little works as it should, but I love it, it’s home and I have or want nowhere else to live.I always come back. I am Guyanese and I reserve the right to criticise my country.
It is a brutal way to learn harsh lessons. He should have been in the Masjid praying or studying the Quran. No sympathy!!! There are consequences to inappropriate behaviour
Poor man indeed! For the love of a song look what he has gotten in return. If Music is the food of love then play on but don’t beat the liquor out of my head for that is the reason why I am enjoying the song. Have you heard of the Film “Jackass”? I say damn Jackass.
……….growing up in guyana!!……..its a known fact that some groups invite friends for a drink and then later advantage the friend because of some old fued……..this asult is more than rum………..guyana needs help with this rum scurge ……….
;) Actually…..I can safely conclude now in my mind. It’s not only that Guyanese are sick and backwards…….it’s also the Guyanese that left it too, that lives around the world.
Amen.
To all those who replied to my comment re: the remarks of Concerned.
I am a Guyanese. I love Guyana, I will never, ever critized my country, I will never, ever condemn my country. I love Guyana but like everyone else, I left because of economic reasons. I came here, got educated, have a beautiful and well paying job in the private sector. I am well respected amongst my associates and colleagues. I frequent Guyana, I assist my families there, I look out for Guyanese. I will not stand up and let anyone put Guyana down. I may not like the principles that the Guyana Government stands for, but I have to respect their principles because I am here and they have to govern there. Let us as Guyanese learn to respect ourselves, others and our country. We must not condemn, we must embrace. So please do not misquote me when I stick up for Guyana.
To all: I have already expressed my feelings and I ask that you guys respect my opinion(s) and stop sending replies to my email. Thanks.
TO CONCERNED: Be blessed and have an understanding day.
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you ‘Concerned’. The majority of bloggers said you cannot condenm the land of your birth for the simple fact that you may have to return there someday if indeed you are a son or daughter of Guyana. Just because a fraction of people do stupid things it means you are going to stereo-type all Guyanese. This may be your perception but as you can read hardly anyone agrees with you. So wipe that smile off your face and look at the positive side.
ur rite dem carry the sickness and backwardness wid dem. me buddy tell me that some a dem in little guyana does still run matie wid cutlass.
is wa song he been playing
SUHANI RAAT.
As Guyanese, we have the right to criticize pertinent matters. However, we must remember that Guyana is our birthright. No one can take that from us. Many of us choose not to see that we are in fact tolerated by the people whose country we live in. I always see Guyana as the place where I intend to return to in such time when I can reside in relative safety. Do not judge Guyana based on the country you reside in, you are in somebody elses house, they can put you out. And you will be sent “home” to Guyana. Remember, most of the things you could do in Guyana and “get off,” you can’t do there. I am sure many of you can’t see a trench where you are, much less feel for fish in it. Guyana is UNIQUE! I criticize things that are happening in Guyana based on people’s actions. I would never call Guyana a backward country, many of the things and people who are responsible for the education I have today, that I hold dear to me, are in Guyana. When I visit Guyana, and I travel along the east coast road going to berbice, and I pass the coconut plantations, farms, houses, stopping at Mahaica market to drink coconut water, eat some “roly poly,” and continue my trip, I know that I am in Guyana, and with all the problems the country may have, I fall in love with Guyana everytime. I know that I am in my place, where I am free to be a Guyanese. When these criminal activities are brought under control and kept at bay, I will return permanently to beautiful Guyana, and use my knowledge and experience adquired to contribute in some way to my beloved Country. Guyana depends on us, its children, who have adquired certain knowledge and trades, to return when the time comes to make a difference. This guy Joe Coxall has some interesting information that could be used in the area of cultural development and tourism. I hope when the time comes, he too will return to Guyana to throw in his weight. When I talk about Guyana, I get carried away! Peace to all guyanese.
Sometimes when I hear about all the crime, corruption, etc. etc. happening in Guyana or when I visit Guyanese chat sites and read some of the very racist comments there….. I become very disillusioned about my motherland and say that I don’t want to EVER go back there…..
BUT when circumstances beyond my control make me return to Guyana….., I end up not wanting to leave the land of my birth to return to this life I have here in N. America.
The moment the plane touches down in Guyana, I begin to feel so prooooud, so haaaappy to be in my homeland, I smiiiiiiiiile from ear to ear! Everyone I meet in my beautiful Guyana is friendly and helpful! Everyone lives in racial harmony…. none of the B***S*** and name calling I see on chat sites!
I feel extremely proud to see all the development, all the beautiful houses and shopping areas going up, etc. etc. AND SURE, it makes my heart bleed to see some things which shouldn’t be there in the 21st Century…… but we as Guyanese, especially the ones overseas, who can help out in any way….. please do so…. it is for the betterment of our children in Guyana.
Organize small groups (within your families, workplace, places of worship, etc.) and sponsor a school, place of worship, village, community, ORPHANAGE) in your homeland. We will all benefit in the end.
For those of you who bad mouth Guyana, I am sure you haven’t been back in a loooooooooooooong while. Return for a visit. Stay at a hotel downtown if you have no close relatives. Of course, don’t dress up to the nines or act like YOU are IT! Exercise care and caution, same as you would do in any part of the world you choose to visit. Be nice and niceness will follow you.
There is nothing to make you feel prouder than a visit to YOUR country!!! (And as my best friend told me…… when you have to go, you have to go)…. so don’t live LIFE being afraid!
I LOVE MY GUYANA! I LOVE ALL MY GUYANESE PEOPLE! I am honored to be GUYANESE!!!
Thanks for letting me put in my two cents;)
PROUD GUYANESE
P.S. Christmas is coming up. Do we need another TV???? Another sweater???? Send that money to someone in need …. somewhere in the world…. You wouldn’t believe the happiness and love that will be in your heart for years to come!
