Region Three stands ready to take firm action against residents who litter as it fears the outbreak of a serious epidemic.

According to a press release Regional Chairman Julius Faerber said residents have been dumping garbage indiscriminately and it has placed the region’s health at stake. “I will not sit and allow people to dump their garbage anywhere they choose… this nonsense has to stop…it is time that we arrest the situation,” he said.

Faerber told a meeting comprising representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Central Board of Health and the neighbourhood democratic councils that he has been bombarded with complaints about garbage disposal, poultry rearing, illegal buildings and the sale of perishable items displayed on the ground. He said the rules and regulations governing such practices are clear and “definitive action” will be taken against lawbreakers. Faerber also chided the NDCs and the Public Health Department for not curbing the situation in several communities; allowing it to become uncontrollable.

On conclusion of the meeting a number of measures were agreed to be adopted to tackle the situation. These include posting signs, discussing the matter with the errant resident and giving the resident formal notice of his/her offence. Failing this, the release said, the matter will be forwarded to the EPA to proceed with legal action.

The release said Vice Chairman Manpersaud and Regional Executive Officer Nandlall Ramkissoon also attended the meeting.

    AYE!……..

I can’t understand why everyone can’t take pride in their surroundings. I would hope if you paid a large amount of money to purchase a home and live there raising a family, that you would make it as comfortable and clean as you could.

Guyana, the land of constant rain and sunshine should be an inspiration to every home owner to plant flowers and keep their weeds down to a minimum. Garbage in and around your home is a sure sign of laziness!

I AM A GUYANESE LIVING IN SURINAME AND VISIT GUYANA MAYBY EVERY 3 YRS. I AGREE WITH MICHAEL TANNASSEE,BECAUSE REGENT STREET , WATERSTREET AND OTHER STREETS AROUND THAT AREA ARE A MESS. it would also be very nice if the bridge across regent street leading to the arcade could be repaired. this was my comment.

  8. Ulric UNITED STATES says:

Moderator, when your reporters write a story and mentions a region, please ask them to indicate the name of the region for us “outsiders” who have no idea what district comprises the region.

Moderator’s comment: It’s usually done. Or should be. Perhaps this was an oversight. Region Three encompasses the entire West Demerara and the Essequibo Islands.

  9. Caesar Agustus UNITED STATES says:

Very good. “The mind of man is the state of man.”Guyana is in the state it is, a logie slum dwelling look, because of the people living in Guyana.
