Minister of Education Shaik Baksh said he is concerned that some students at the University of Guyana were unable to register for the semester because some lectures had not submitted their grades.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Baksh said “This is totally unacceptable and the UG administration should take measures to discipline those lecturers who failed to do so because it means that those students’ registration will be incomplete and we are not tolerating that.” About $200M was spent to remove asbestos from the Turkeyen Campus since the close of the semester in July. “The asbestos project had entailed the removal of asbestos from several buildings and I must mention that the Institute of Applied Science (IAST) building was lately included to that project and all the asbestos were disposed and we also did air testing to ensure quality of the air by testing for asbestos fibres,” he said.

Baksh said the joint effort with the ministry, contractors and the university also included vacuuming, painting of floors and buildings. Also, $12M was spent to rehabilitate and repair the floor of the library. He said additional work will be done on the university’s electricity system. Baksh said $4M was spent on rewiring the Education Faculty and more sums will soon be invested to rewire the other buildings.
