- employee in custody
Two men, including an employee, have been arrested in connection with Monday’s fatal shooting of businessman Ricardo Henriques, during a robbery.
Stabroek News understands that the employee was among several persons who had accompanied the 31-year-old US-based man to Juice Power on Middle Street to purchase water.
The man was arrested shortly after the incident, during which Henriques was also robbed of a bag containing a substantial amount of cash, reportedly representing money he had collected from persons that day.
The other man, this newspaper understands, was picked up subsequently and was riding a motorcycle that matched the description of the one the gunmen got away on.
Police, in a statement yesterday, said they are investigating the shooting. According to police, investigations revealed that Henriques, his father Richard Henriques and three employees went to Juice Power in a motor vehicle to purchase water.
While the employees went to make the purchase, two men rode up on a motorcycle and the pillion rider, who was armed with a gun, shot the younger Henriques in his head. He then snatched a bag which contained an undisclosed sum of cash and escaped on the motorcycle along with his accomplice.
The elder Henriques gave chase behind the perpetrators but had to abandon his efforts after the armed bandit discharged rounds at him. He was not injured. The younger Henriques was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said an employee and another man have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Richard Henriques had told reporters at the hospital that Ricardo decided to buy a lottery ticket at the Lotto booth near Juice Power.
The dead man, a father of two lived in the US and only returned to the country two weeks ago to do business. He was described as a wholesaler. He had been due to renew his US resident card today and was scheduled to return to the US on Friday.

Keep the pressure on GPF it is time to put a lid on such crime in the city ,i have noticed a great improvement in patrols in the city i hope this will not dissapear after the holidays, time to place some spotters in some high buildings near the banks . keep it up i was impressed.

Anyway the money is his and whosoever killed him for something they will spend out is heartless!!!!
buying lotto has notting to do with that bag of money……business have expenses.
its wrong to take whats not yours and killing for….it defines the minds involve!
come on sandy, take that back, when is money ever too much.
If I were the family, I’d check that ticket, could be he won some money too.
Plus, I want to say good work police, and quick action too;
Keep on the trail while it’s hot
It wasnt like a big bag it was just a brown paper bag.
these employees need to face the full brunt of the law for their actions….
Based on the preponderence of the evidence the prosecutor is able to assemble, and the defense,,,,,,it’s possible that they could walk if there are no eyewitnesses. This is not an open and shut case.
sad ending for an young man who was brave enougth to pack up from the usa an to invest in is home contry an was cut down like that that to tell you that you are not save in guyana you have an government that dont care about the people a of the security of the contry .each day one read the papers some get kill ,what the plans do the government have for the security of the contry ,why dont the home affairs minister get out office he is failing the people each day ,my prayers go out to the family ,an people need to stop walk arond with cash for your hone good .now i think guyanese need to start arming them self more to protect their lives an property the police an the government are not doing it so who must do it ,so many may say this an that at the end of the day who feel knows it .
guyanagirl,,,did you read the full account of the incident?,,,SOME MEMBER OF THE DECEASED PARTY WAS ARMED AND FIRED A COUPLE OF BULLETS AT THE PERPS. For the life of me, we need to call for emergency legislation banning ALL WEAPONS in Guyana,,,, I’m telling you, nothing short of this is going to stem the rash of robberies and murders,,,,TAKE ALL THE GUNS AND PASS EMERGENCY LEGISLATION THAT CARRIES A MAXIMUM MANDATORY SENTENCE IF YOU ARE FOUND IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM. 20 years hard labor would be a start. Lets start by having an amnisty period for all citizens to turn in their legal/ illegal guns, then enact the legislation, the business cumminity needs to get involved in this, they can give food vouchers, and vouchers for goods and services to people turning in weapons or giving information about persons having these weapons in their possession, the Police commissioner already has the data base for the compilation of this information, and we can solve alot of past murders and past crimes. What you think readers,,,speak your minds, help me here…
Shariah Law. If guilty make them pay with their life also.
Do you want it in just this case or others too. Because under shariah law women has very little, on no say at all.
Those criminals are known, with two detained, do the test to prove or not anyone of them discharged a firearm recently, and from there starts the interrogation..
Buddy, there are 2 types of tests for that particular type of evidence, fixed and movable,,,,which when done will be inconclusive.
guyana goverment need to open his fat eyes and see whats is going on in guyana.and do some thing before leave office.
what about what’s happening in the rest of the caribbean, Do you think it’s the fault of those Governments, or is it just the Goverment of Guyana
How about the businessmen taking some responsibility for their own safety, you want the Govt. to hold provide security for them while they are doing business.
the man already dead, does the humanright will help the family now, pay for the funeral and food dfor the family, hope so.they try to protect the gangs and theift.
THE ONLY TIME U HEAR FROM THE GUYANA HUMAN RIGHTS IS WHEN THE POLICE BEAT OR ILL TREAT A CRIMINAL.
WHEN A PERSON GETS KILLED IN THEIR HOME, OR WHILE BEING ROBBED THE HUMAN RIGHTS PPL NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER SAY ANYTHING.
THEY R FOR THE CRIMINALS NOT THE LAW ABIDING PPL IN GUYANA.
Very difficult to stop inside jobs.
So the killing was not as random as it was first reported.
Now businessmen have to watch everybody around them.
How dreadful.
