WHAT A CONTRAST! After the shrinkage of the bridge

CONCERNED – Although the construction of the bridge has been completed, Leocadio (Brazilian Engineer) explained that recently inexplicably parts have begun to sink, and this has been cause for CONCERN. He showed this newspaper a section of the bridge which had to be dug up and which he suggested might indicate a problem with the concrete

LACK OF CONCERN – But when Stabroek News contacted Transport and Hydraulics Minister Robeson Benn,(Guyanese) said that the sinking parts of the bridge were NOT A MAJOR CONCERN.

Was born and bred in Lethem, speak portuguese, not a problem if Guyana is swallowed by Brasil. It’s becoming evident by the day, if we don’t take interest in our own property smeone else will. Indeed Brasil is a growing world power and the economy of Guyana is probably smaller that the state of Amazon. Look out Lethem, Guyana and all overseas expats…..it’s all happening in the backyard. If we don’t go home and do tangible work on the ground our fingers on the keyboards will become more aggressive. Come on! lets go back and join the locals. Will be back in two and a half years.

There was headline in the new York times and in the folha of São Paulo some times ago which carried the above head line about Guyana. This can be very true because Brazil is a growing world power with its strong and solid economy, tecnology, and others with can easily offer the brazilians to catch guyana to trade with.This is partly because Guyana has many resourses that would interest the Brazilians to invest and they can easily benefit from the advantage they would receive, free tax on items purchase is just one exemplo..And besides, Guyana being a country actually unkonwn to most Brazilians in the past ,is becoming a interest to them as a destination interesting to trade, ou as the headline in the news papers had put it, to let Guyana be catch in the web by Brazil.

Ok, so the bridge is almost complete. What are the repercussions, implications and cnsequences for Guyana after it is opened?

1. Drug Trade – should get a big boost with better transporation

2. Gun Smuggling – same as above

3. Brazilian Military Presence – right along the border, which is downright excellent

4. Transportation – Brazil’s inland processing zones could access Guyana’s coast for export

5. Demographics – greater export of Guyanese to Brazil and greater import of Brazilians. The latter could become a significant minority in less than a decade if they emigrate to Guyana in substantial numbers

6. Business – promise of a flow of capital to Guyana from Brazil

Anytime there are cracks in footings and foundations greater than one eight of an inch wide,the result is from defferential settlement. The foundation under that cracked area is not 100% compacted,or is compacted with poor soil, or the area rests on a substandard footing. This mistake can be very costly, and is the product of either negligence in structural inspections, or improper building code /poor design. In this case,where the bridge meets the road,the foundation under should be a reinforced concrete abutment , not soil.

Anyway, and not to change or divert from the topic… here is a question for Stabroek News (SN) – To what extent can the professional skills of expatriate Guyanese (particularly those living in North America) be tapped (or to what extent were they invited to participate in on-going development projects in Guyana) by the by the current Guyana Government administration; or, were they ignored completely by the administration?

DHB has outlived it’s life span, the Canji bridge is still standing with no problems.
The BHB and Takutu haven’t completed, but already have major problems. Now tell who is backward?
LFS educate them for free, then paid for their higher learning in foreign countries, but yet they came home and doing every thing backward.

They dismantled the GNS and GPM, and nothing to fill the void. NOw 60% of the country unemployed. HOW BACKWARD IS THAT?

Re: “same quote, what is the difference./////////////////////////backwards.” How ever you wish to interpret these statements they cannot be true as some of the most educated Guyanese-born nationals who are now living outside of Guyana were educated during the PNC’s Administration era; unless the current Guyanese President (among others) received “dumb down” education for he himself from reports has been the recipient of overseas education paid for by the PNC led Government. Therefore, were educational strategies like these which were undertaken by the PNC Government are now to be described as being “backwards”?

it is a shame!!!
These guys/ministers are so use to making excuses, that they are comfortable/happy it seems when things do not go right, and is happy blaming it on the past leaders. But, they are too dumb it seem to know their mistakes, or talk before they think!!! I am a person who likes and admires progress, but does not like to be fooled!!! and will not be fooled easily.

In that some of the infrastructural development projects over the “28 yrs. PNC + 16 yrs.PPP” being talked about would have attracted computations such as Financial Rate of Return (IRR), Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFROR), Economic Rate of Return (ERR), Break-Even and Risk Analysis et cetera, et cetera… then, what were you doing with your time that you are stuck with your “simple maths” – climbing the fruit trees on your parents’ farm while some others were in college or what. :-D

How about showing us how your “simple maths” of “28 yrs. PNC + 16 yrs.PPP” translates into engineering economy?
