Hundreds of children and adults attending the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) Fun Day at  Camp Ayanganna on Friday were afforded a close look at the GDF2, one of the two Bell 206 Ranger helicopters recently acquired by the force.

According to a GDF press release, Captain Byrne and other officers from the GDF Air Corps explained some of the operational aspects of the craft. Children registered their names for entry into a raffle which would see a lucky six being afforded the opportunity to experience a helicopter ride over parts of George-town.

Led by Lieutenant Colonel Enoch Gaskin, paratroopers of the 31 Special Forces Squadron wowed the crowd as they jumped out of the sky van at a height of 5,000 feet east of their landing site on the play ground.

Following the paratroopers’ display, some of the children were treated to helicopter flights over Georgetown.

The release further stated that after the helicopter rides, 30 soldiers who had recently concluded the army’s basic recruit course displayed superb martial arts skills. To loud applause, they demonstrated how those skills could be used in combat to defeat the enemy.

The GDF’s Co-op Credit Union also drew the winners in its raffle for the month of September. The drawing for the October raffle is scheduled for some time in December.

How lovely……….this GDF is beginning to sound like a Toys “R” Us Vacation Land…..

“……..To loud applause, they demonstrated how those skills could be used in combat to defeat the enemy………..” i never heard of a bandit brandishing karate skills to the armed services!!!!!

    • ulric UNITED STATES says:

Were you really an active member of the armed services? If you were, you would know something about “hand to hand combat” or perhaps you are more adept in slight of hand combat. ISNM

    • amen-ra UNITED STATES says:

lol, sandhurst you are so right.

    • stone UNITED STATES says:

The days of hand to hand combat in the field, is a thing of the pass, even through we in the US still get train that way, because you never know, but the GDF going hand to hand that would be the day, with that said just keep doing what you guys do.

    • Charriot UNITED STATES says:

They are promoting the GDF, so others may join the services and take the country to higher heights.

Come on Sandman, stop being a hate monger.

    • good guy UNITED STATES says:

Sandhurst –stop being a hater and give credit where it is due . You defended this army is several past issues and now you are condemning it . We all know that you were fired –blame the system not the institution .

I guess that’s the only thing those toy choppers can really do. They should sell them to media houses for aerial coverage of the news.

    • SandHurst First GUYANA says:

HEY…..YOU GOT A DAM GOOD POINT!!

    • former G.D.F. N.C.O. UNITED STATES says:

Fulano-De-Tal I think that you are choseing the wrong person to side with on any issue in relation to the army , Sandhurst was send to repersent the army and in extention the country at one of the best school in the world when it come to training for soldiers and he let the country down, cannot get into any details because to be honest I do not know all the details , but he was send back to Guyana what a shame, I hope that you are not a former , or current soldier what the army is doing with the kids is good its a motivation to them they may want to join when they grow up and be a help to the country and its future. just stand down.

    • Kaieteur Gold UNITED STATES says:

So, why do you think that the people at the “media houses” in Guyana are less “safety conscious” than those that fly the “news choppers” here in the United States of America?

  3. SANDHURST BE CAREFUL, THE GDF IS NOT SOUNDING LIKE TOYS R”Us VCATION LAND . THEY ARE TRYING TO EXPOSE SOME OR MOST OF THEIR MAJOR TALENT AND SKILLS. SO DONT TRY TO BE LITTLE THEM, WORK EITH THEM THE ARMY IS A NICE PLACE TO BE AND I CONGRATULATE THEM FOR A JOB WELL DONE EXCEPT FOR TORTURE

  4. I PERSONALLY WOULD WANT A RIDE IN THE BELL 206 AND IF COMMODORE BEST COULD AFFORD ME WITH THIS OPPORTUNITY I WOULD BE GREATFUL.

  5. amen-ra UNITED STATES says:

Come on Sandhurst this is a positive way for the army to show its side.We cry on them when they do wrong, lets give them thist least, the young people will now aim to either join the army or to gain experience from this visit to see what is done within.Do,nt always be negative.I am not a fan of the new Chief of Staff, but with this i feel he was right to have this done.

  8. SWAT UNITED STATES says:
