-youth accused of snatching chain

A man who allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Nineteen-year-old Darius Barrington of 643 Block X, South Sophia pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from the person.

It is alleged that on December 4, Barrington stole a gold chain  valued $30,000 from Shonette Greene.

Greene, who was also in court, stated that she was proceeding west along Brickdam when Barrington who was riding his bicycle in the opposite direction rode up to her and snatched her gold chain. She said that she started screaming and Barrington fell off the bicycle. Greene told the court that Barrington got up and started running but a taxi driver chased after him and apprehended him on South Road and handed him over to the police. Barrington was arrested and later charged.

However, Barrington stated that “I dey going to wuk when I get frame charge.”  He said that he did not snatch Greene’s gold chain but  “I wan finish de story so I gon pay foh de chain.”

The magistrate ordered that Barrington be remanded to prison and that he appear again in court on December 9 with the money to recompense Greene for the chain.

Yeah Crow, I’d let him walk to all the clogged drains that need clearing & unnecessarily buhy areas that need weeding, then right back to the lock-ups for the next 5-10 years. That way when he’s walking (without hand-cuffs & police guards)in the freedom of society he’ll know what work is & how to appreciate the fruits of labour

pro snatcher he is…the magistrate should see right through him and give him a sentence to reflect that his snatching days should be over…

This is nonsense, pay for the chain and no jail time? How is Guyana going to get rid of criminals who prey on the poor, if the solution to their criminal activity is to have them compensate the victim? ISNM

  6. Marlon Rajijah UNITED STATES says:

What happened to the chain? Did he swallow it? If he was caught shortly after the act, should he not have the chain in his possession? Or did he discard it while fleeing? Maybe, we need to ask the taxi driver, don’t you think?

    • evileyes CANADA says:

most likely they have an acomplice when snatching where no one can see when they throw it…and if caught –no goods on them…i stood there once and saw how they operate…told the copper who to go to first..bang…others chasing the snatcher…police got the acomplice with the wallet….both of them get their mouths busted up b4 police took em away….

A court settlement is it all.
    No jail. No fine.
Perhaps court costs as now seem to be the practice.

Yes he snatch de chain, but where it gone to?
He was chased and caught and arrested and charged.
    Now who gat de chain?
Hopefully not the catcher, nor de police!
    Shades of intrigue.

    Case settled.
    Pay de compensation.

There were more serious cases, like rape, accident death,
and they were settled by settlement without any court fine
    or imprisonment.

    Pay and settle.
    It dun.

  9. SWAT UNITED STATES says:

Kudos to the taxi driver for apprehending this “career chain -snatcher” and handing him over to the GPF minus a “first-class public-spirited citizen beating”! Luck fella! He should challenge Mr. Corbin for the leadership of the PNCR because by his answer he did not “confirm or deny” he ever snatch this woman’s chain …he just wanted to be a “good” Samaritan and pay for it. Very slick!
