Fifteen people were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday morning following an accident on Carifesta Avenue involving a minibus and a car. Fortunately, none of them was seriously injured and the majority was treated and sent away.

The accident occurred at approximately 8:40 am and involved minibus BLL 4207 and motorcar PGG 5268. The driver of the car, 51-year-old Wendy Mitchell, was admitted to the hospital with a broken right leg and lacerations about her body.

According to her son Gavin Mitchell, his mother was proceeding west along Carifesta Avenue when a cyclist attempted to cross the road. In her attempt to avoid the cyclist she lost control of the vehicle and it spun into the path of the minibus which collided with her.

After the collision, her car ended up in the trench in front of Marian Academy, while the bus ended up in the canal outside the Guyana Legion headquarters. The cyclist reportedly left the scene of the accident after the collision Stabroek News was told.

Alvin Frank, the driver of the minibus, said he had just pulled off from the corner of Camp Road and Carifesta Avenue and was proceeding east when the car suddenly span out of control in front of him. He said that despite his best efforts he was unable to avoid hitting the car.

Frank said he did not know whether a cyclist was involved. Most of the passengers of the bus were taken to the hospital for checks.

At the time the accident occurred, the road was wet following torrential early morning rainfall.
Meanwhile, the conductor of the bus Shawn Ashley lamented that after the accident, persons who claimed they were assisting attempted to steal the tape deck and other valuables form the bus. Two men were apprehended and were taken into police custody, this newspaper was told.
