On the heels of two major Guyana-linked drug busts in the last month, customs authorities at the Port of Miami, on Monday acting on a tip off unearthed 373 pounds of cocaine hidden in furniture aboard a vessel, whose last stop was in this country.

The furniture in the container

This bust involved 194 packages valued at US$5.5M which was concealed in 72 pieces of furniture which was packed in a container. Investigations will likely be done to determine if the furniture was loaded here.

According to NBC6.NET, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers inspecting the containers at the Miami seaport were alerted by a CBP K-9 to a specific container loaded with furniture.

The officers, attached to the Anti-Terrorism Contra-band Enforcement Team, proceeded to examine the furniture and discovered three packages concealed within one of the pieces of furniture. One of the packages was tested by the officers and the substance was positive for cocaine. More packages of the drugs were discovered in 71 other pieces of furniture.

The container with the furniture arrived in Miami last Friday aboard the freighter M/V Rio Para. The container was moved to the CBP facility for examination and opened Monday. The vessel’s last port call was Guyana, the news article stated.

“Our men and women are working diligently, especially during the holidays, in protecting our borders against all forms of terrorism. Stopping the flow of illegal drugs is one of Customs and Border Protection’s primary missions,” said Ruby Hogan, Port of Miami CBP director, was quoted as saying.

Director of Field Operations Harold Woodward was quoted by the NBC 6.NET as saying that “This is an outstanding seizure, and it was accomplished with one of our specialized Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Teams at the seaport. We mustn’t forget the great work our K-9 units perform at our seaports as well as the airports”.

Two shipments of pepper sauce from Guyana with cocaine stuffed into the dividers of the cartons were seized this month in Canada and the USVI.

  1. Satish UNITED KINGDOM says:

This bust involved 194 packages valued at US$5.5M which was concealed in 72 pieces of furniture. If we combine this incident with last week’s two shipments of cocaine seized in Canada, we might conclude that Guyana’s foremost export to the world is COCAINE!

What a disgrace. The writing was on the wall even before Rodger Khan allegedly started dabbling in drugs trafficking in a big way. Clearly the situation has become very serious indeed.

Now the Government has succeeded in making inroads with the curtailment of other serious criminal activity, they should start looking at this particular criminal activity and move to emulate those Asian countries who have mandatory death penalty for serious cocaine traffickers.

The white lady will not go away unless drastic measures are taken. Furthermore, drugs traffickers use violent crime/bribery as essential tools in their arsenal which, if left unchecked, eventually leads to anarchy.

    • gtman0077 UNITED STATES says:

This is a disgrace for Guyana and all Guyanese , there has to be something the government of the day can do to stop this from continuing . I believe there is need to have foreign help to curb this trend , we need the DEA office to be set up in Guyana.

    • Nattie CANADA says:

Why should I be disgraced by this event. This evil drug was not processed in Guyana, GT is just a transhipment point. After all it is destined to a place that have a ready market – USA – because a whole heap of ADDICTS live there. Americans should be ashamed that their cowboy president for the last 8 years, went to Iraq without substantial evidence and destroyed the lives of innocent people. Those nurds who piloted the 911 aircrafts were from Saudi Arabia. Why didn’t the USA invade Saudi Araiba. Well it’s payback time ; the cocaine will destroy the lives of Americans, after all it’s America, who cares.

    • carl UNITED STATES says:

No, they don’t help from anyone. They just need to have the willingness to go after the drug pushers(major ones). Listen, is not a big place and most people know these people(drug dealers). Maybe the money in is being distributed to the right people.

    • Myinput CANADA says:

Another sad thing is that the law enforcement officers are easily bought. They would take any amount of money to break the law. This has to be dealt with. I know the general public, even I don’t have respect for them.

    • Fulano de Tal UNITED STATES says:

gtmanoo I agree with Satish, the DEATH PENALTY will deter them from even thinking of cocaine traficking as a means of income. Like Satish said, “Drugs traffickers use violent crime/bribery as essential tools in their arsenal which, if left unchecked, eventually leads to anarchy.” Although to some extent we already have anarchy in Guyana it could be controlled if the right steps are taken. The sad thing is that ALOT OF BIG BOYS have shares in these embattled businesses so I don’t know what will truly happen.

    • Soldier UNITED STATES says:

The amazing thing here is that all these drugs ended up in the USA and Canada and no one seems to care, they are paying the hugh amount of cash for it and they may be the end users as well,,,I am sure if any one of you blogs gets a chance in this hugh market you will take a shot…Guyana alone cannot stop this trade, they need the help of these bigger investors.

    • billp CANADA says:

The way it looks, only Divine intervention can stop this nonsense.

  2. LINDENBANNA UNITED STATES says:

We are also monitoring this situation here in Miami,,,,we want the heads of the cartel(s), and we will “OUT” them publicly,,,,, we will play tit for tat until the PPP Government is out of office.

    • freespeech UNITED STATES says:

remove the colombian govt first, these are individuals that learn the trade in the US. you had them before why give them 5years only.
the least you could have given them is 30years.

the govt. is not responsible for individual actions, if that is the case you will have to remove a lot of govt. heads around the world including you know who first have to go.

    • evileyes CANADA says:

      LINDENBANNA
you said:::we will play tit for tat until the PPP Government is out of office.
are we putting back the pnc in office?
then if because of illegal drugs you will oust the ppp then you have a whole laod of governtments around the world to put out of office…ya tink its guyana alone shipping drugs?? does guyana produce coke?check again and see if it does…and..when yuh put pnc back in power.will you go home to stamp out coke from entering guyana?

    • LAMBADA UNITED STATES says:

does it means with all them cocaine entering the USA, that you are calling for OBAMA TO BE REMOVED.

    • freespeech UNITED STATES says:

lb u have to start from
      MEXICO,
      COLOMBIA,
      PANAMA,
      BOLIVIA
and the list goes on, and dont forget yourself with the synthetic drugs with labs all over the US.
      GUYANA may be the last.

Evileyes said it! This coke thing in Gy is not new at all. This has been going on for decades regardless of ruling party. Over the past few years more people getting caught because Uncle Sam has been checking his imports more thoroughly due to terrorism…So far, no luck with Bin Laden but the having lil success with an expensive white lady coming backtrack from Guyana. I wonder if she born and grow in we country???

  3. Husband in Florida notified about this yesterday. He said it is the talk at the water coolers and all over the news there.

    Well, some heads will roll

National emergency because apparently the coke is now being refined and packaged in GT.

satish what you want the guyanese people to do if the so call big powerfull countrys are telling them what price the should sell they sugar and other export for which if they do export them they will run at a lost so they.do you think if they were make a good profit from exporting furniture and pepper and ect they will turh to drugs knowing the risk of geting caught and lost away in some inhumane jail in america ang get some insane jail sentence like 200 years who the hell live 200 years america make me laught

    • Fulano de Tal UNITED STATES says:

Ok big gt, so we should just let it slide & continue like they were exporting rice or sugar. I like your reasoning. Do you plan running for office in Guyana anytime? Just so I know how much longer I NEED to stay away from the land of my birth

    • big gt UNITED KINGDOM says:

you get me wrong i am not saying they should ship drug all i am saying is that to get people to stop doing something you have to give theme something to do in return.these big country need to start giving better price for the export like sugar, rice ect and stop raping these small country with there modern slave master ways.but i guest you will not understand cause you think you are one of them house slave

  5. M. Xiu Quan-Balgobind-Hackett UNITED KINGDOM says:

Read about it: history, origin, politics and economics of cocaine.

  6. VIJAY SINGH UNITED STATES says:

The authorities in Guyana know of the cocaine/money launderers. What are they doing? The lack of education and the pomposity of these dealers are known by the big edifices they populate the city and countryside . Guyana’s population is small and the daily toll of drug busts are destroying the little good that is left in Guyana. The main export does not seem to worry the administration and Guyana will remain at the bottom of the ladder where development is concerned. Recent reports about Mr Singh of CANU and his inability to talk to the media tells a lot. Mr Lambert Marks was a good administrator of CANU. During his time, I learnt of the non-co-operation of the Police and understood the problem he faced in dealing with politicians too. The cheap talk by those in authority about fighting the drug smear is just utterances from toothless poodles.

    • evileyes CANADA says:

      VIJAY SINGH
IF YOU KNOW THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS ABOUT THIS THEN WHY NOT CALL THIER NAMES AND EXPOSED THEM NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR BREATH…
SURE IF I HAD INFO LIKE YOU I WOULD PLASTER IT HERE FOR ALL TO SEE AND GET THE GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL BUSTED AND DUSTED…UNTI THEN DONT ASSUME….

  7. Nuff UNITED STATES says:

Once again. Is the head of CANU taking questions or just ducking them?

    • cyd CANADA says:

I think he is doing his job. All these seizures is proof of it.

If the substance was seized in Guyans, the corrupt authorities would have it back on the market.

  8. tyronemiller UNITED STATES says:

It seems like snow is fallin in GY, where is all this white lady comin from, ”wow” where is lunchman on this as he is always on the wrong side of the pillow, guess he will talk his crap later when ”JJ” writes out his coment ……….the US gov has some special handcuff for all those who coverin the cartels tracks, when the music starts to play there will be singing and shoutin …….peace out

why dont the US handcuff the large apetite for the stuff?
somebody’s got to feed them…see how much passing through mehico by the minute…oh and check the under ground tunel there as well…the apetite is so large they will take it from anywhere now…nuff of dem used to vacate in afghanisan for their fixes too….

  9. Joe Coxall UNITED STATES says:

Here is a great solution to this problem guys. Here in the USA, the authorities will seize your car and throw you into the slammer if caught drunk behind the wheel. They do not go after the supplier or the middle men, they come after the end user.

Lets do the same for drugs, test everyone for drug use and seize all their property and throw them into the slammer.

What you will then discover, that the very security mechanisms and personnel including the drug enforcement Czar, will all end up behind bars, along with three quarters of the American population.

    Joe.

    • Nattie CANADA says:

Mr Coxwell, you have a very sophisticated point which I like. Where will we find the man-power resources? …Oh , just thought if we bring back the troops from overseas, we can provision those resouces.

    • Nattie CANADA says:

Mr Coxall, you have a good point. However, where would we get the resources in terms of man power? … Oh, just thought if we bring back the troops from overseas, we can provision those resources more usefully.

    • rambler GUYANA says:

Well clearly that is not working becasue the demand for cocaine is higher than ever…Guyanese just filling the need. This is a US problem. What suggestions do you have for your America.

    • Mark Harper UNITED STATES says:

Joe you would be in for a great surprise. Historically the end users are just the simply trying to get his “high”. They really don’t have any real assets. Now the big guys don’t use that stuff man. The the trade will still continue even after you put a couple of end users in the slammer. Have you seen the movie Escobar???….

    • OwenKhan UNITED STATES says:

Happy New Year Joe. All the Best for 2009.

    • M. Xiu Quan-Balgobind-Hackett UNITED KINGDOM says:

Mark Harper, YOU taking movie as REALITY! Reality is STRANGER than you think.
