On the heels of two major Guyana-linked drug busts in the last month, customs authorities at the Port of Miami, on Monday acting on a tip off unearthed 373 pounds of cocaine hidden in furniture aboard a vessel, whose last stop was in this country.

This bust involved 194 packages valued at US$5.5M which was concealed in 72 pieces of furniture which was packed in a container. Investigations will likely be done to determine if the furniture was loaded here.

According to NBC6.NET, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers inspecting the containers at the Miami seaport were alerted by a CBP K-9 to a specific container loaded with furniture.

The officers, attached to the Anti-Terrorism Contra-band Enforcement Team, proceeded to examine the furniture and discovered three packages concealed within one of the pieces of furniture. One of the packages was tested by the officers and the substance was positive for cocaine. More packages of the drugs were discovered in 71 other pieces of furniture.

The container with the furniture arrived in Miami last Friday aboard the freighter M/V Rio Para. The container was moved to the CBP facility for examination and opened Monday. The vessel’s last port call was Guyana, the news article stated.

“Our men and women are working diligently, especially during the holidays, in protecting our borders against all forms of terrorism. Stopping the flow of illegal drugs is one of Customs and Border Protection’s primary missions,” said Ruby Hogan, Port of Miami CBP director, was quoted as saying.

Director of Field Operations Harold Woodward was quoted by the NBC 6.NET as saying that “This is an outstanding seizure, and it was accomplished with one of our specialized Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Teams at the seaport. We mustn’t forget the great work our K-9 units perform at our seaports as well as the airports”.

Two shipments of pepper sauce from Guyana with cocaine stuffed into the dividers of the cartons were seized this month in Canada and the USVI.

  1. All these ” BIG RIGS ” that are involved in this drug-cartel needs to be ” ROOTED OUT ” now so that the citizens are aware of who they are. I do think that a lot of the big-boys as we call them back in the days are in this drug-cartel. All those big homes that has been built and fancy cars that are driving around, the people who owns them needs to be investigated with a fine-tooth-comb as my Mom would say. I am awaiting to hear when the shit hits the fan and the big mouths would start spilling the beans on all who are involved in this mess.

We are not yet sure whether this shipment occured in Guyana. Let’s wait and see.
We have a lot of GREEDY Business people in this country who would sell their own souls for a US dollar regardless of the detrimental use of this drug and its damage to the youths of this world including Guyana.

  3. Mohamed UNITED STATES says:

Guyana is caught in teh middle here and teh Guyana govt. does not have teh resources to stop it. So all this about teh govt. being complicit is just nonsense. The US should do more to stop it, especially since teh market for teh drugs is mainly there. Take the market away and like every other commodity, no demand equals no money equals no production.

Now you all..we all know that Cigarettes/Nicotine kills more people everyday than cocaine and that the biggest exporter of this killer drug is the US. So, why is no one talking about tobacco/nicotine trade and why is not illegal?
like the calypso says.. “See yuh mistake, so who civilized and who is the snake.”

Oh to all you back biters back biters. Why can’t you just shout your mouths, why can’t you just close your eyes and let the people live an do what they have to do. As i have said 3 busts amounting to about 500 kg is nothing a drop in the bucket of a market that wants about 10 tone a month. If money can be made off of it, I see no problem ( we guyanese want to live the AMERICAN DREAM ) big house, nice cars and to make sure our families taken care of, what’s wrong with that? And americans and canadians always get what they want, we guyanese just so happens to have a small amount of the things they want so why should we say no. 3 BUSTS AND STILL PROUDE TO BE GUYANESE I HAVE NO DAME SHAME

  6. r s dasai UNITED STATES says:

Mohamed: Great. Make crack & cocaine, like cigs and alcohol, etc legal and there is no problem. An this will save a lot of money which will be used to treat the users. Six of one and half a dozen of the other.
Jag is not in charge of Bush’s country, where the users are. Remember Reagan’s supply side economic? Make it and someone will buy it.Enjoy the Roman’s new year. Just some though thoughts.

Take a break all ye bloggers, take a deep breath, have drink (please no drinking and driving)and reflect on some of the good things that have happened to, in and for Guyana over the past twelve months. Give your minds a rest from things bad and concentrate on things positive, at least for the night.

On behalf of my wife and I please allow me to wish all bloggers, the people of Guyana and the entire Guyanese diaspora, the very best for 2009.
