The first local online only news website, which is updated several times a day, has been launched.

Demerara Waves located at www.demerarawaves.com, Managing Editor Denis Chabrol said, can also provide live webcasting/audio streaming of major events at very “cost-effective and competitive rates in exchange for high technical and production quality.”

The website also offers visitors the opportunity to listen to some of its interviews and other material on demand.
Chabrol is of the opinion that the online entity has come at a time when Guyanese at home and abroad are increasingly using the internet as their major source of news and information.

“Demerara Waves does not necessarily seek to focus on the routine news-of-the-day but we see ourselves as the news-leader in covering the uncovered or little-covered news that matter to the average person,” Chabrol said in a release.

“We certainly take pride in having a small number of stories but at the same time very important ones that you will hardly find in your current news-diet. In essence, we aim to be different because the news landscape has a lot of scope and space,” he added.

Chabrol said his website guarantees confidentiality of sources and the twin pillars of immediacy with accuracy.
According to the managing editor, “Already we have proudly led the way on reporting on a number of issues that the mainstream media have since picked up.”

Some of the issues picked up by other media houses include the dissent in the main opposition Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR), the intended leadership-challenge by late President Forbes Burnham’s son-in-law, Dr Richard Van West Charles, plans to oust the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Georgetown and the merger of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and International Cooperation.
