Teen convicted for murder of Guyanese girl in NY

A 16-year-old who fired a stray bullet that killed a 10-year old Guyanese girl in New York was convicted for her murder yesterday.

According to an Associated Press report, an Albany County jury found Jermayne Timmons guilty of second degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.  Timmons was charged for shooting Kathina Thomas as she stood on the steps of her apartment on May 29, last year. Her family had moved from Guyana to Albany.

On the stand, Timmons admitted that he fired the gun but denied firing the fatal shot. He told the jury he was with a group of boys when he fired at another group but explained that the .32 calibre pistol used could not have fired the .45 calibre bullet that killed Thomas. After deliberating for nearly 12 hours, the jury found Timmons not guilty of intentional murder but convicted him of murder with depraved indifference to human life, AP said.
