Six months jail for hitting girl with bottle

Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Persid Edmond sentenced a man to six months jail for hitting a 12-year-old girl in the head.

According to the facts of the case Junior Joseph, 29, pleaded guilty to unlawful and malicious wounding when he appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

On January 11, at Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Parveen “Shelly” Persaud was playing with a friend when Joseph, of Number 2 Village, Canje, attempted to hold her [friend’s] hand. The friend rebuked him and Persaud intervened.

Joseph became angry and choked Persaud. He then picked up a drink bottle and dealt her a blow to her head, causing her to sustain injuries.
In his defence, Joseph admitted that he hit the child but said “the bottle hit a post first and then it hit she.”
