Bilingual notice put out on Aranka regulation exercise

The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) along with the Ministry of Home Affairs will be conducting a regularization exercise at Aranka in the Cuyuni Mining district from Wednesday, which will last for two weeks.

In a move not often seen, the notice, which was published in yesterday’s Stabroek News, was in both English and Portuguese. According to the notice the exercise will facilitate any qualified alien to obtain a work permit to work in the mining sector. Applicants need two passport-size photographs, a valid passport and supporting documents for mineral production, business/company, dredge licence, among others.

The translation of the notice was done by a member of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), Commissioner of the GGMC, William Woolford said. He stated that the miners body had been in discussions with the GGMC and a member requested that the notice be translated and undertook to do so. Many Brazilians work in the mining sector and the bi-lingual notice will likely be welcomed by them.
