Labourer accused of obeah on magistrate

A 28 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara man yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charge of practicing obeah on a magistrate when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.

It was alleged that on January 27, 40-year-old labourer Alan Kissoon was found practicing obeah to intimidate Magistrate Priya Beharry who sits at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

According to Kissoon, he had a matter at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
“My worship, I had a case before Ms. Beharry an I fus does reach to court because I don’t mek joke with de time when I gat to guh to court, I like reach very early.”  I went at the pipe early de morning fuh drink some water, suh I draw de water in me hand an when I done I de sprinkling out me hand and de police seh dat I de sprinkling some obeah thing and wukking obeah in de pathway de Magistrate gat to walk, but my worship, de pipe deh close to de woman walkway, all I de doing was sprinkling out me hand.”

“Me ain’t even know but wukking obeah, suh me ain’t know how I gun wuk obeah on de Magistrate. I really feel shame about de whole situation cause everybody just deh looking at me bad now,” Kissoon further added.

Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews said that the defendant was caught by a resident of the compound sprinkling a liquid substance where the magistrate has to walk to get to her chambers.

The Magistrate told Kissoon that the next time he goes to court he should take his own drinking water.
He was placed on $10,000 bail and is to return to court on February 18.
