Cell phone robbery accused granted $75,000 bail

A 28–year-old man who is accused of robbing another man of a cell phone, while using personal violence was granted $75,000 bail yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Perry Whyte of 198 Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery with violence. It is alleged that on January 7 at Kitty, Whyte robbed Ishwar Bopa of a cell phone valued $80,000 and used personal violence to commit the act.

The prosecution told the court to take into consideration that Whyte had been before the court for similar matters before, should his lawyer apply for bail.

However, Whyte’s lawyer stated that those other matters had been dismissed. The defence attorney then applied for bail.

The magistrate placed Whyte on bail in the sum of $75,000 and transferred the case to Court Six for March 4.
