More equipment is soon to arrive for the National Ophthalmology Hospital though on Monday doctors screened about 120 patients for cataract and other eye ailments that may require surgery.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release the screening was done in order to create a database for surgery. Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran and a team comprising Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha and other officers from the Region Six Regional Democratic Council observed the proceedings. Ramsaran said patients were orderly at the hospital and he commended the Cuban team for their services.

GINA said more equipment and personnel are expected to arrive shortly from Cuba. Currently Cuban bio-technicians are installing equipment in the operating theatres.

Meanwhile, the 76th Mission Miracle flight was expected to return to Guyana this week via a Cuban aeroplane and the 77th batch of about 50 patients was to leave via the same aircraft.

Since the start of the Mission Miracle programme two years ago thousands of Guyanese have had acute eye conditions addressed and their vision restored.
