Accused ganja farmer remanded

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday remanded to prison a farmer who was allegedly found cultivating several cannabis sativa plants and having a quantity of the narcotics in his possession.

Forty-two-year-old Mahadeo Ramkumar of Alliance Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charges of cultivating a prohibited plant and possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

It is alleged that on February 12, Ramkumar was found cultivating several cannabis sativa plants and on the same day he was found with one kilogramme of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Ramkumar be remanded to prison and transferred the case to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for February 24.
