Former Ontario, Canada Premier David Peterson on Friday  paid a courtesy call on President Bharrat Jagdeo at State House where they discussed such issues as strengthening of bilateral relations and investment promotion, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.

According to GINA, the former Ontario Premier in an invited comment after the meeting said the discussions were fruitful.

Peterson who is currently working on the Pan-American Games bid said that he is trying to persuade Guyana to go to Canada for the games. The former Canadian premier  is heading the venture from Toronto to host the Pan-American Games in 2015.

He was the twentieth premier of the province of Ontario, Canada from June 26, 1985 to October 1, 1990 and led a Commonwealth group in 1992 to Guyana to oversee the 1992 elections.

The former premier, according to GINA, stated that it is important for Canada and Guyana to strengthen their relations and pointed out that there are several ways they could accomplish this, including through investments, infrastructure and linking entrepreneurs and investments.

“There are a lot of Guyanese in Canada, so it is important that we build those bridges,” Peterson noted.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that the two countries are also discussing co-operation in the area of sports for the benefit of young people.

Canada works with different sports organisations, Olympics associations and officials from various countries to look at ways in which young people  can be educated to enhance the quality of programmes they receive, GINA added.
