The taxi driver who was involved in the accident at Agricola Public Road last Monday which claimed the life of a Herstelling seaman was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magis-trate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Nicolas Veecock, 37, of 305 Sunflower Place, South Ruimveldt, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

It is alleged that on February 23, at Agricola, East Bank Demerara, Veecock drove motor vehicle HA 8294 in a dangerous manner which resulted in an accident that killed 40-year-old Jaisankar Gobin, known as ‘Kumar’, a father of three, of 363 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara. Prosecutor Denise Griffith said that on the night in question about 10 o’clock, Veecock was “racing” along the road when he slammed into Gobin who was attempting to cross the road. She said Gobin never regained consciousness and succumbed shortly after the accident.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Veecock be remanded to prison and transferred the case to Court Seven for March 5.
