A 28-year-old man, who was allegedly caught by the police throwing away a purse that contained a quantity of cocaine and cannabis, was remanded to prison on Tuesday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Jermaine Heywood, 28, of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

It is alleged that on February 25, Heywood was found with 2 grammes of cocaine and 21 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

However, Heywood’s lawyer stated that his client was in a car with his girlfriend at “lovers lane” at Craig backdam, East Bank Demerara when the narcotics were found some distance away from where they were parked.

Prosecutor Dennise Griffith stated that “the law is clear for the offence” for which Heywood is charged. She objected to the bail application.

The prosecutor noted that the police saw when Heywood threw away the purse and when they retrieved it shortly after, the narcotics were found in it.

Heywood then stated that he was indeed in the car with his girlfriend and the police ordered both of them out and searched them.

He said that though nothing was found on him the police informed them that they had found the narcotics in their possession.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Heywood be remanded to prison and transferred the case to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for March 6.
