Horse cart driver denies snatching woman’s purse

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson granted bail to a ‘horse cart driver’ who allegedly snatched a woman’s purse containing a quantity of cash and a gold chain.

Kevin Douglas known as Kevin Johnson of 14 ‘C’ Field, Sophia, pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from the person when he appeared Friday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on March 4, Douglas stole a purse containing a gold chain and a quantity of cash totalling $75,000 from Hema Persaud.

However, Douglas stated that on the day in question he went to his cousin who lives in Garnett Street, Kitty, to inquire about a job but “he beat me up and claim  that I thief de things from de woman.”  He said that he did not snatch Persaud’s purse.

The magistrate subsequently placed Douglas on bail in the sum of $30,000 and transferred the case to Court Two for March 22.
