Mayor Hamilton Green in a press release is encouraging Hindus to let their “rituals be a reminder that every good Hindu needs to work together with others” as they celebrate Phagwah today.

Hindus, according to the Mayor, presently constitute the largest religious group in our country and the responsibility of giving guidance to the nation therefore rests on their shoulders.  The Mayor also pleaded with the Hindu community and all religious leaders to support lofty principles.

Religious leaders, Green said, “must demand of all of our National Leaders at all levels, clear, honest statements on morality and justice, and to set the example”.

Green extended 2009 Phagwah greetings to Hindus and all Guyanese but noted that the current state of the economy should not be forgotten during the celebrations.
