A 33-year-old man yesterday pleaded not guilty to two counts of larceny of cattle when they were read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that between March 10 and March 11 at Georgetown, Dishon Ramphal of 413 North East La Penitence stole one heifer valued $70,000, property of Moses Glasgow. It is also alleged that in the same period, Ramphal stole one calf valued $60,000, property of the said Moses Glasgow.

Ramphal’s attorney told the court that her client had vehemently denied the allegations levelled against him. She further stated that according to her client’s instructions, he was in the vicinity of Sophia where the cows were found on the day in question but  he was going home after visiting his girlfriend who also lives at Sophia and he had nothing to do with the cows.

The lawyer stated also that her client was stopped by police ranks on duty who questioned him about the cows and then “proceeded to beat him.” The lawyer pointed out also that the cows have been  recovered. The attorney then made an application for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum on the grounds that her client posed no flight risk and has a fixed place of abode.

According to Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith, the police acted on information received and as a result of intelligence gathered, the defendant was caught chasing the cows and  he was arrested and later charged.
The defendant was placed on bail in the sum of $50,000 for each charge and his matter was transferred to Court Three for April 9.
