Zambian High Commissioner to Guyana Albert Munchanga committed to rejuvenating his country’s relations with Guyana when he presented his credentials on Monday to President Bharrat Jagdeo at the Office of the President.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and Ambassador Elisabeth Harper also attended the ceremony, a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said.

In an invited comment, Munchanga said relations between Guyana and Zambia date back to the early years of Zambia’s independence when Guyanese experts in different fields visited Zambia and worked in various state institutions. He said the relations were further strengthened after Guyana established an embassy in his country.

Zambia now has a permanent base in South America with the establishment of an embassy in Brazil in 2006. According to the High Commissioner it is an avenue through which Zambia has been promoting bilateral relations, particularly with Guyana.

He believes that there is limitless potential for collaboration between the two countries in various sectors.

“There are possibilities for exchange of experiences in the development of agriculture. Guyana has a lot of experience in sugarcane production and we are also involved in sugarcane production, there is mining in Guyana just like in Zambia…in future if we encourage our private sector, they could consider ways of trying to promote transport communication linkages through partnerships. That is very possible if business people sit down and look at how to approach that challenge,” Munchanga said.
