The Guyana Fire Service on Tuesday received a quantity of fire-fighting equipment and gear from the French government.

The donation included fire extinguishers, burns kits, safety belts and other items that will aid fire-fighters in their duties. The items along with the $826,490M allocated in the 2009 Budget for the GFS will enhance its capability, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. The sum is expected to be used to upgrade and purchase new equipment and expand training and other educational subventions as well as to maintain fire stations.

French Ambassador to Guyana, Richard Barbeyron said the donation is one of many gestures stemming from bilateral relations between his country and Guyana. He said too his tenure here will be used to foster stronger relations as Guyana seeks to open a consulate in his country. Barbeyron said Guyana will benefit from more interventions, particularly for the agriculture and security sectors. He said too the chief fire officer in his country is expected to meet with his Guyanese counterpart soon.

Meanwhile, Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle said he was grateful for the equipment. He called the donation timely; saying it will help fire-fighters to protect life and property.
