The Mayor and City Council says it aims to reduce the amount of litter in school compounds by 30% over six months with the start of its school anti-littering programme recently.

In a press release the Council said the programme would employ a holistic approach to littering in Georgetown schools. It comprises several components which would allow stakeholders such as teachers, parents, school vendors and community leaders to be involved.

The Council said the programme was started at the South Ruimveldt Primary School. In keeping with its objectives pupils will be educated on the consequences of littering, proper garbage disposal and they will be encouraged to become proactive on environmental issues.

It is anticipated that at the end of the programme the students would display a more positive attitude towards waste disposal. The Council expects that they would be better informed about the practice of waste management and disposal and as such would become advocates of change for environmental matters.
