Man assaulted wife over visiting her mother – court hears

A 32-year-old man was yesterday refused bail after he pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful assault when it was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that on March 20 at Georgetown, Elroy Azore unlawfully assaulted Vanessa James.

James who shares a common-law relationship with the defendant told the court that he would usually lock her up in the house and beat her whenever she decided to visit her mother. “He don’t want I guh an see my mother, Your Worship. Is nah de fus time he hitting me. He does beat me an swell up me face.”

James further stated that on the day in question, she just decided that she had to pay her mother a visit and upon her return, the defendant assaulted her. “My worship, I decide that I jus can’t stay away from my mother like that, after all she looks after my child. An suh I decide fuh guh an see she an when I come back he hit me.”

James added that Azore has made several threats to her life. “My Worship, he does tell me how he gun kill me, an I gat to decide between either he or me mother.”

According to Azore, however, he did not assault her. “My Worship, me ain’t assault she. I send she out fuh buy chicken fuh cook an she din come back. Afterwards we get into a argument, but me ain’t assault she, my Worship.”
A probation report was subsequently requested and Azore was denied bail. He is to return to court on March 30.
