The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) says Guyana has lost a great leader whose life was multi-dimensional and well-balanced with the passing of former president Janet Jagan.

In a press release the M&CC recalled that Mrs Jagan was the first female elected to the council and she served as a councillor at the Mayor and Town Council in 1951. On January 8, 1951 the then deputy mayor Lionel Luckhoo presented a motion on citizens’ education which she had seconded. According to the release, she had said the motion gave voters an opportunity to hear from their representatives the progress being made. It would also allow them to contact and review past activities of the council and to express their views.

The MCC said Mrs Jagan’s service and contribution to the development of the nation is invaluable and it extended condolences to her children and other relatives.
