Winner in road safety mascot contest gets computer

The British High Commis-sion recently presented the winner in the Road Safety Mascot Competition hosted by the National Road Safety Council with a computer and trophy.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Programme Officer at the Commission Sarah Wheeler said winner Bradley Chandra was “an advocate for road safety” when she presented him with the computer. Additionally, Guyana Police Force Assistant Superintendent Linden Isles presented the lad with the trophy.

According to GINA the mascot competition aimed at resuscitating efforts to make children and the public aware of issues relating to road safety. It was open to persons between the ages of 6 and 19 years.

Chandra’s design named ‘Cautious Colin’ bears a top hat inscribed with the word ‘STOP’ while the back of the hat reads ‘Slow Down’. It also boasts a caution sign. The mascot’s hat and socks are black and white; signifying a pedestrian crossing and it is suited in a school patrol jacket with traffic lights very visible on its front.

Coordinator Ramona Doorgen commended Chandra for bringing out the need for reducing speed in his mascot as part of the road safety message is that speeding kills.

In response, Chandra said he was elated at winning the competition and that he had completed his drawing in one evening.

This competition was held in conjunction with the ministries of Education, Home Affairs and the GPF in order to raise public awareness about road safety and improve communication, cooperation and collaboration among road safety agencies; improve national road safety data collection and quality and promote enforcement measures.

The ceremony was hosted at the Guyana Red Cross Society in Kingston.
