A 25-year-old woman who had embezzled over $842,000 from Supreme Air Conditioning was remanded to prison yesterday when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Monalisa Joyuex of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara pleaded guilty to the charge of embezzlement.

Between July 27 and December 23 last year, Joyuex who was employed as a clerk or servant fraudulently embezzled over $842,000, property of Supreme Air Condi-tioning.

Joyuex, offering an explanation to the court, stated that she had collected money from a customer but it was VAT exclusive. She said she had written up the receipt, but did not allow the customer to sign for it.

She said her former employer at Supreme Air Conditioning had negotiated with her to repay $350,000 to settle the matter, but because she was unemployed at the time she could only have afforded to pay $55,000.

Joyuex then asked that the court give her a week to pay off the money.

However, the prosecution stated that Joyuex had been receiving full payment for the services Supreme Air Conditioning provided to its customers, but was always saying that the customers had outstanding payments.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Joyuex be remanded to prison and that she appear back in court on April 14 with the rest of the money to fully recompense her former employer at Supreme Air Conditioning.
