Kitty man grazed by bullet after nightclub row

A 32-year-old Kitty resident escaped with his life early yesterday morning following a confrontation with another man on Sheriff Street during which shots were fired.

Troy Smith of 108 Thomas Street was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital for a graze on his forehead caused by a bullet and later sent home. The shooter is yet to be apprehended.

This newspaper was told that several gunshots were heard in the Campbellville area around 3 am yesterday.

When contacted yesterday afternoon Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said the police had received a report about a shooting on Sheriff Street.

According to Persaud, around 3 am the suspect and others had an altercation inside a Sheriff Street night club, where Smith was also present.

The suspect left and later returned in the company of another man and began questioning Smith, on Sheriff Street a short distance from the night club, Persaud said.

It was during this time that the suspect, who is known to the man, pulled out a gun and fired a shot at Smith. He sustained a graze.

From reports reaching Stabroek News, the incident apparently moved to First Street as residents in the vicinity of the Campbellville Post Office heard at least five gunshots around 3 am.

They then heard loud voices, as if someone was being pursued and then a white wagon transporting several men sped off in the direction of Prashad Nagar. Shortly afterwards, according to reports, a man was seen scouring the area, which is poorly lit, with a torchlight. He left minutes later.
