A 21-year-old minibus conductor charged with robbery with violence was on Monday refused bail and remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on April 17 at Georgetown, Shawn Scotland of Pere Street, Kitty robbed Shan Pertab of one cell phone valued $20,000 and at the time of the robbery used personal violence on the complainant.

The defendant who pleaded not guilty to the charge begged the magistrate to be granted bail. “Can I please go on bail?” he repeatedly asked the Acting Chief Magistrate.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, however, objected to bail on the grounds that the offence is a prevalent one. According to Seetaram, the stolen item was recovered on the defendant’s person by a police patrol on the day in question and is lodged at the Brickdam Police Station.

The unrepresented Scotland was then refused bail and his matter was transferred to Court Six for April 27.
