A 22-year-old mother of two was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) early yesterday morning after she was slashed in the abdomen, by her reputed husband.

Yolanda Brummell of Lot 1210 ‘B’ Field Sophia was rushed to the GPH at approximately 4.15 am, bleeding profusely from a wound to her abdomen. She was later admitted to the ICU where she remained up to last evening in a critical condition. Her reputed husband is on the run.

When this newspaper visited the hospital shortly after 5 pm yesterday several of the woman’s cousins were present. While no one could say exactly how Brummell was wounded they told this newspaper that woman was originally from the Essequibo coast.
“We ain’t know is wha happen… Is de police come tell me that she in the hospital and she critical,” one cousin said. “They [the police] say that is she children father do it.”

Brummell’s youngest child, the cousins said, is only a few months old.  However, they could not say where the injured woman’s children were at the time.

Lot 1210 ‘B’ Field, Sophia was tightly locked when this newspaper visited and neighbours expressed surprise when told of the incident. Some residents said that Brummell and her reputed husband would argue regularly.

“I ain’t hear no commotion or anything this morning [yesterday],” one neighbour said. “I don’t know the woman [Brummell] and her family well because I moved in recently. But I would normally hear the two of them shouting at one another on a regular basis.”

The same neighbour reported seeing the woman’s reputed husband removing items from their home shortly before 5 pm yesterday.
Police, according to the neighbour, had been at the house looking for the man earlier.
