Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Kellawan Lall has said that he is fairly satisfied with the operations of the Lusignan landfill site but there are some areas where the operator needs to be more aggressive.

Minister Lall last Thursday checked on the operations of the site aback of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, and he was accompanied by  Head of the Ministry’s Solid Waste Project Implementation Unit, Walter Willis, Minster of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn and Operator of the landfill site Lakenauth Puran, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.

The Minister noted that some additional works need to be done at the area, including repairs to the access road and to the active pit, while the Ministry will be looking at repairing the roads since that is not part of the operator’s contract.

The dumpsite is fairly active and most of the garbage that is being dumped at the site comes from the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and Regional Democratic Councils (RDC) but more private persons have also been utilizing the site.

GINA said further that the contract for the 10-acre landfill site was awarded last July to Puran Brothers Disposal Service and was approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It entails the daily collection of waste on the East Coast of Demerara from Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm and also on public holidays. It was initiated to ease the burden at Le Repentir landfill until the Haags Bosch Sanitary landfill site becomes operational at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

According to GINA, Lall said that plans are afoot to make the Lusignan site a temporary holding area when the Haags Bosch site becomes fully operational early next year. That idea is still under consideration but initially the site will last for 10 years.
