Porter dies after flung off truck

A 19-year-old porter of Waterloo Bath, West Coast Berbice died after he was flung off the tray a moving truck around 12:30 pm on Friday.

Stabroek News learnt    that Premchand ‘Ravi’ Harryprashad was sitting on a plyboard on top of the truck belonging to Double ‘R’ Hardware Store at Bath Settlement when the board was blown off by heavy winds.

Harryprashad, who was sitting alone in the tray while another porter was in the cab with the driver, was blown off along with the board and suffered injuries to his head.

The man’s 17-year-old wife of six months, Neesa Tulsi told this newspaper that she got a message around 1 pm on Friday that her husband had been involved in an accident.

The incident occurred close to their home. But by the time she got to the scene he was already taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital.

She hurried to the hospital where she saw her husband in an unconscious state. According to her he was being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) in an ambulance when he died in the vicinity of Number 41 Village.

Tulsi said she and other relatives were still at the hospital awaiting a vehicle to take them to the GPH when they saw the ambulance returning. She told this newspaper that her husband had only started working with the store on Wednesday.

He also leaves to mourn his mother Urmela, who was too distraught to speak; father Rachpaul and 15-year-old sister Roshini.
