A man who allegedly accompanied another to break and enter Lizzie’s Snackette and steal a quantity of pastries and a case of drinks was granted bail last week when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Zakir Khan, 40, of Grove Housing Scheme, pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny.

It is alleged that on May 1, he along with Oscar Alli, broke and entered the snackette of Paula Abrams and stole a quantity of pastries and a case of drinks valued $13,060.

Prosecutor Munilall Seetaram stated that some pastries were recovered. He noted that Alli had also been arrested but he escaped from the Brickdam Police Station.

However Khan’s lawyer, Mohamed Zafar applied for bail for him on the grounds that some of the items that were allegedly stolen were returned to Abrams. He noted that his client had nothing to do with the theft and  Alli was the one who stole the items.

Seetaram then noted that Khan was seen in the compound where the snackette was located with the items mentioned in the charge by a public-spirited citizen who immediately contacted the police.

Abrams, who was also present in court, stated that this was the third time that her snackette had been broken into for the year. She noted that the same person had broken into it once in January, then again in February. She said that she came to that conclusion  because the person always stole “de pastries and juice”. She said that they would break the lock with a wood so as to get into the snackette.

Khan then stated that the owner of the snackette had seen Alli as he was trying to escape with the items over a fence and held him up at gunpoint.

Khan said that when the police were called in the owner and Alli told them that he was not involved in the break-in but  the police insisted that he was. “De police even bruk up meh two hands.”

He then stated that he was willing to recompense Abrams for the items.
The magistrate then placed Khan on bail in the sum of $30,000 and ordered that the case be transferred to Court Six for June 4.
